It's possibly happened to me again... freaked

For those who may remember, a while back I posted a gripe about how a certain publication had sent me an acceptance letter for a poem, only to then send me a rejection letter as if the acceptance letter was never even sent.  Well, it's happened again, this time involving a different publication.

I just received an e-mail rejection letter from one of the editors at Illumen that completely conflicts a previous acceptance e-mail  from the other editor.  Now, this stuff  can happen, but this particular poem is already listed in the Illumen ToC on the Genre Mall web site!

When you think about it, this could potentially harm the "previously unpublished" status of the poem if it has indeed been rejected by Illumen and I decide to send it back out.  It's my word against the posted ToC.  And if an editor does a search for the poem, it just may come up as being published in Illumen.

I usually try not to name names in situations like this, but I had already announced the publication of this poem in Illumen on various forums and blogs, as well as adding it to my list of publications on my web site.  I in no way felt that I was "jumping the gun", since I had received the acceptance e-mail and confirmed the poem as being listed in the Illumen ToC.  If this poem has indeed been rejected after all this, I will need to post a lot of corrections.

I'm starting to really prefer places that use actual contracts.

Perhaps I'm worrying over nothing, perhaps this is merely a breakdown in communication.  And yes, I did send an e-mail asking for clarification.  Now I wait and see what happens.

Yep, feelin' like I'm in the Twilight Zone again.  Cue the Twilight Zone theme song...

Just to prove I'm not crazy (yeah, right), here's a link to the Genre Mall, where you can find the ToC of Illumen issue 8 (last I knew my poem, as well as my scifaiku, were still listed in the ToC).

And if it's not listed there, then maybe I am crazy. Then it'll be time for a nice, tight jacket and soft padded walls.

Thanks, Mike. I wanted to make sure I wasn't just imagining it. Been one of those days. Actually, the last 24-48 hours have been rather weird.

So what's next. Will you ask them to go ahead and publish it as they promised?

Funny you should ask that, Lyn.  My mother-in-law (perhaps my biggest fan) sent me an e-mail telling me she just received the copy of Illumen she ordered.  Apparently, the poem in question is indeed printed on page 66.  However, I won't be completely worry-free until I get my contributor's copy and see it for myself.

Stranger and stranger.

Well, cool. Weird, but cool. Now not to be nosey, but if it was a pay market, the real test is: did you get paid?! lol

Payment should arrive with my cotributor's copy.  That's one of the reasons why I'll still be a bit worried until I have the copy in hand.

I think the editors aren't talking to each other. I'd email the one that rejected you and say 'thanks, but you guys already have my poem listed in your TOC. Would you mind explaining?'

I actually send an e-mail along those lines. Strange thing is, they seem to use the same e-mail account. At first I thought it was another instance of having a poem rejected after it was accepted, but now I'm starting to realise that it's more an instance of having a poem rejected after it was published.

It's kind of silly, actually, when you think about it.

I did something like that quite by accident to one of the authors for FS. I accepted a story, sent a contract and then...

accidentally sent the author an email telling him that we hadn't accepted the story yet. He panicked. Thankfully he wrote me because I had gotten him confused with someone else and didn't realize it. Just as thankfully, he accepted my apology for the shock I gave him.

Sometimes we just have to keep our authors on their toes.

My mind is at ease now.  I received a response from the co-editor that had sent the rejection after the piece was apparently published.  It appears that my submission had been misfiled.

All's well that ends well.

*grin* now if you could just figure out who was knocking on your door...

I'm still waiting for a poem from you about that incident.

He, he...I probably wouldn't do one for Flashing Swords about that particular subject, but I have already composed a horrorku for the collection using that incident as inspiration.
