One of my favourite illustrators of fairies and folktales is Arthur Rackham.  His lines have a richness and complexity that is simply mesmerising.  The more you look at his artwork, the more you see.  He didn't always use bright, bold colours.  Instead, his work often had an earthy quality, as if it grew from the soil of some Sylvan glade.
 
I list Rackham as one of my influences, although I could never begin to approach his skill with line and form.  Still, I have tried to add little "Rackham" details to my works.  When I add faces in my trees or in the background, it's a nod to Rackham.
