FYI -

You might be interested in reading David Drake's short story, "The Mantichore", if you haven't.

It originally appeared in Swords Against Darkness III.

It can also be found in Drake's collection Vettius and Friends or the upcoming Balefires paperback from NightShade Books.

As I recall, Drake went further back beyond the beast story to the earlier stories of the Mantichore being a possessing demon or some such. (been a while since I read it)

Sounds right up your alley. :-)
