I just popped by BG and noticed the article on Hereward the Wake. Wow! Excellent scholarship and an excellent eye for the roots of fantasy/ I made Hereward's acquaintance in a book on Medieval outlaws (along w/ Eustace the Monk, William Bell, et al).

I've long thought fantasy fans would be well rewarded by taking a good look at old epics and hero tales, especially the lesser known ones. Beowulf & King Arthur are great, but Hereward, Arrow Odd, Rustam, Rama, the Three Kingdoms, Starkad the Old all have marvelous tales of adventure and tragedy and heroism.

Any hints on what's next in the series?

Hi Dave, sorry I didn't see this sooner. I'll pass your compliments along to Joe, who has amassed quite an interest in this kind of thing and has several topics lined up. Last I heard he hadn't quite decided which one to try next.

Best,

Late comment here, but wanted to say this was a very interesting article. Hard to believe I'd never heard of Hereward before this.

Thanks, Chris. Joe's planning on some more historical articles on similar subjects. I'll announce them here when they go live.
