Everything you could possibly want, and enough reading material to keep you happy for quite a while!

Where is it, you ask?

Why... right there on our home page. Right next to Flashing Swords #10.

What's the link, you ask?

Glad to be of assistance. The link is flashingswords.sfreader.com

And I decided to be nice to you all. I wasn't going to put any of it on line but... if you're sneaky and scroll down the page some, you'll find a link... a special, secret link.

I've advertised (again) the Summer Special, issue #10 and ROTS at the huge sci-fi website Chronicles.
Thousands of visitors a day.
Fingers crossed.

Chronicles claims to be the biggest online Sci-fi and fanatsy website in the world.

It would be a good thing if a few of you were to go over to Chrons and post up your thoughts and opinions on the FS magazines and novels.

The thread I started is NOT the place to mention what a great story you yourself wrote...those kind of posts go in the Press release section.

Cheers: Jaq

They're fussy at Chronicles...

Hidy, Jaqhama -

Glad you're enjoying Chronicles!  I've moved a few of your threads that had been under the SFF News category to the Press Releases section, as they were more suited to that board.  Promotional threads for new materials are typically posted in Press Releases.  The SFF News section is typically reserved for general news items.

Funny...I would have thought that the SFF news section was for SFF news?
I must think on this.yeah

I will say that I don't see a lot of the forum members visiting the press release section compared to the SFF news section.
So if 10,000 Chrons readers don't see the blurb I put up for FS and ROTS you guys and gals will know why.
I ain't going to say nothing about modding for the sake of it. I do realise the world would have ended if the guy hadn't moved my post. skull

(Oh this just gets better...
Be real careful if you decide to post something on Chrons you might want to edit or even delete later...because you cannot edit or delete after a 30 minute time spam.
No honest..it's in their forum rules and was confirmed by their Admin/Owner.)

Guess you need to write them and ask for clarification on the difference, because you didn't intend them to be press releases and you'd like them to be in the sf news thread. Then ask what you need to do to change them so they fit where you intended them.

Been there, done that.
The mod who moved my post didn't even bother to respond when I sent a message back.
I had aslo posted up a couple of links to the free Deadstock and Hal Spacejock novel downloads...appareantly that's not SFF news either...that's also a press release.
A thread people started about not being able to edit or delete your own stuff was responded to thus...if people were allowed the option to modify or delete their posts chaos would ensure and the forum would quickly fall to pieces. (That's a condensed version of what a mod wrote there)

Another of their mods tried telling me that not being able to edit or delete is the norm on most forums.eyes

I think I'm finished with posting at Chrons...places where the mods jump on the slightest thing they see as 'wrong' are never cool places to hang out.

I deleted my account at Chrons.

A forum where you have mods moving stuff around simply for the sake of it and not allowing forum memebrs the choice of editing and/or deleting their posts isn't somewhere I want to spend time.
I'm too used to the motorcycle forums I'm on, where everyone is treated as an adult in respect to the above.

Much like here actually. Are you sure we should be able to edit our own posts ???
I mean really...who knows where it might lead?

My mailing tubes got here today too, so I have something to send out posters with now, if people actually follow instructions and want one.

Kelly...I won't even get a copy of the Summer Special for at least another three weeks...that's how long it took Lulu to send the FS mags I bought.
Unusual it took so long. USA to Oz is normally 10 days at the most. Quite often 5.

And the free download you sent has very tiny writing and I've been unable to make it bigger?
Unless I'm missing something there?
I'm not going to print it out, rather wait for the hard copies.

My copy has just (literally) arrived. Looks good, although there is slight clipping on the title. The top part of the F & S have been cut off and the 8 from 2008 hasn't quite made it. Still, the most imortant thing about the cover is that it has my name on it. smilewinkgrin rolleyes

I'm looking forward to reading the other stories.

The only part that's clipped on mine is a tiny bit of the '8' in '2008'.  If it wasn't right by my name, I might not have noticed it.  :-)

I was just informed yesterday it was shipped. Probably won't get it 'til next Friday.

The clipping isn't gong to be the same on everyone's because it's specific to how the trimming was done. I'll make a point of moving the text in farther from the edges on the next issue.

I'm also enjoying Silent Dirge the Novella by Jared Evers which I've just started. Good stuff.

Actually, I do have a couple of books planned.  Right now I'm working on a sort of prequel about their time during the war.  I don't have any other novellas or shorts with them at the moment, though it's something to consider.  There's a lot of story in that world.  :-)

A 650% increase in sales...not bad!

I think if you were able to keep back issues around, they'd keep selling; but I know that's not how Lulu works. I'm glad I have one of the few hard copies of issue 8.

It's not lulu, Nik. It's the contract the authors sign. There's no provision in the contract to keep their story available in print like that. They sign a contract for the story to be printed in one issue and then archived online for a year. The magazine is a quarterly, and industry standards state that a quarterly issue is only available for a quarter, then replaced with the next one.

Posted By : Nik - 7/15/2008 3:33 PM
Oops. For some reason, I thought it was a cost-savings measure; that publishers had to pay a fee to keep something available through Lulu. Either I was misinformed, or my cynical mind invented it. Thanks for setting me straight.

I bought two hard copies and apparently one of the guys from ADVrider bought a download.

I'll be buying six copies of FS issue #11...two of which I'll be paid for.
My ADVRider mate will doubtless download a copy.

My copies: One goes on the coffee table for anyone to read, the other goes on the shelf for Lin and I alone.

I've mentioned FS and my inclusive stories on a number of forums I'm on...a number of people have mentioned they have or would purchase them.

I've offered a couple of free, autographed copies of Issue # 11 to coincide with a comp I'm running on one website.

I'm sure the FS contract could be tweaked to allow for issues to remain on POD longer, I wouldn't think a year would be out-of-bounds. I agree with Nik, keeping some back issues available is just good business -- something for Janrae to think about.

actually, the staff didn't buy copies of FS 8 that I'm aware of. They got freebies.

Last night I read Elements by R.F. Long. Loved it. Great story and nice to see an Arthurian tale that owes more to the Mabinogion than French Romance.

Wow - this is what happens when I get stuck into work for a while. I miss things. I'm so glad you enjoyed it. I always feel the "Welsh" legends miss out. :D

Can I quote you?

I just received my copy of the Summer issue. Looks nice, but the 8 in 2008 is chopped off. I really wish Lulu employed quality control. It reeks 'amateur' when I pay good dollars and over inflated shipping & handling to receive something that is hit and miss, print wise.

I think LULU does a dis-service to their customers.
The quality control is shocking.

Some of the copies of #11 I bought have the edge of letters chopped on the rear cover, others do not.

The interior formatting is woeful.
I cannot believe that Kelly made a formatting mistake on every page, every few paragraphs.
Quite often the words are spaced too far apart.

Is there not another POD publisher similar to Lulu that one can use?
I know Lulu is cheap...their product reflects that.

I'd rather pay a little more for a POD company that is prepared to assure one of some quality.

Kevin, there's no formating mistakes on the words on the interior. Because the columns are narrow, the kerning is sometimes fairly wide.

Kelly, being only one person, put as much time into going line by line and hand adjusting the width of each line as she could BUT there comes a point when exhaustion sets in and she says "You know, it might not look pretty but I"m only making a couple dollars profit on this, I've spent nearly 8,000 dollars to create this magazine all year and I'm done"

Not blasting anyone here or commenting on hard work, copy editing, or any of that, but I for one am extremely dissatisfied with Lulu products in general, not just the FS zines being discussed here.
The fault is with the printer; their workmanship is bad. Shoddy comes to mind.
I have not bought items simply because they were Lulu products.

I believe Kevin was stating that the interior layout was not Kelly's fault, insisting she could not have made so many glaring format errors. Instead, the blame lies entirely at Lulu's feet due to lack of quality control. The lack of QC has been reinforced by the fact there is no clear consistency between the Special Summer issues. Each POD issue appears to have it's own flaw, which shouldn't happen if Lulu employed (once again) some form of quality control. In a nutshell, no one is blaming you and your hard work.

Yes I know what Kevin was saying. What I"m saying is that Lulu has nothing to do with interior formatting. It's all done by the person uploading the file. So, if there are actually any formatting errors, then yes they are on my shoulders. Not lulus. Lulu just prints the .pdf that I upload. I lay it out, and create it, not Lulu.

However the "errors" Kevin is complaining about are not errors. They are how the text kerns when justifying both right and left. There is a way to fix those lines that have large space in them but it requires going line by line, highlighting the lines in question, adjusting the font spacing and then readjusting the entire page layout. There is a point of diminishing returns and when I reached that point I said "this is readable. not pretty, but readable and I"m finished messing with it."

Lulu is responsible for the problems with trimming off the letters and text.

I understand the law of diminishing returns bit.
And I know that you (Kelly) have poured a lot of money into Flashing Swords, most of which you will probably never recoup.
I'm mightily impressed that you've 'gone public' with the formatting issues also.
Many would have kept stum (UK slang for quiet) and said nothing.
That speaks volumes about your integrity.

Good on you, Princess!
