Perhaps because of my own experiences I wonder if the FS crew & staff have given any thought to having a house character whose adventures appear in each episode/adventure of the magazine?

Not a series character owned by the author and thus ensuring that author shows up everytime--but a character controlled by the publishing entity FS that different writers (or mostly one writer but sometimes others, or mostly different but sometimes the same writer, or whatever combination) tackle and potray.

Thus each issue of the mag would have a Kull, or a Phantom in a myraid of adventures for readers to follow along--but it'd be FS's character, not a writer's.

Just curious. I'm watching a Dr. Who marathon while reading ME's Servant of the Manticore and writing pitches for a possible new Executioner contract--so for some reason the idea popped into my head.

That sounds cool - sorta shared universe idea, but surrounding a recurring protag...I like it. But of course, I'm not on FS's board, lol.

Hadn't thought that far.

It's an interesting idea. How about you design one, Nate, and let's see what you come up with and discuss this in private.

You could make a poll. Have the forum members vote on gender, or origin. Barbarian, wizard, knight, rogue, that kind of thing. Or each member who was interested could give the character a certain characteristic. You could have all kinds of fun with this.
Or ask them a question, "What type of character does Flashing Swords represent to you?".

Sounds like an interesting idea. And the idea of polling readers for what they'd like to see sounds interesting, too.

But to drop my two cents into the idea...

Once the polls are answered and a general idea of what is most desired is made, it'd be a wise idea to then entrust it to a chosen writer to put it all together. Kind of like how, by my reading of it, Doc Savage occurred: All the general elements were given to Lester Dent and he went with them, adding his own flair, and success!

Otherwise, I think, too many cooks could ruin the broth, so to speak.

Again, just my two cents... ;-)

:) I like polls, I really do.

I'll be perfectly honest here.

I'd put up a poll, gather all the results and then completely ignore them. I know me. So I'm not likely to put up a poll but people are more than welcome to post their thoughts and ideas as long as they understand one small fact:

If you post them, I'm free to use them if I want to and I don't have to get your permission to change, modify or do anything else with them down the road.

I think TRtheJ's concerns are well-taken, but giving the task to one writer seems to undermine the collaborative nature of Nathan's proposal.

How about, instead of a shared character, a shared Flashing Swords world (like "Thieves' World")?

I think that would be required, yes. Unless the character had the ability to time jump, dimension jump and slide through alternate realities :)

James means only a shared world, ie. different writers would have their own characters and situations in the same setting.

I don't see how it undermines the collaborative nature. The collabaration occurs in the character's development: the polls, etc. All the one writer would do is bring it all together. Collaboration could continue, if wished, in everyone reviewing the final product, to offer suggestions concerning likes and dislikes. This would lengthen the process though.

A shared world could work, too. But who will put all the suggestions for it together in the end? Someone will have to do it whether character or world, I think.

I think I'd take a different approach to the suggestion. I wouldn't offer a character, I'd offer a company of them. To wit, a mercinary company of them. With a commander, officers, rank and file members, a magicker's corps, healers . . .kind of like what Misty Lackey had with Kerowyn's company in the Valdemar books, but without such a specific setting.
We'd have to put together a bible, and let writers write stories about characters without changing (too much) the supporting characters. This is sort of what happened with theives world, but more focused. T-W was a great success because it allowed a lot of lattitude in story telling while keeping everything tied together. That would seem to me to work better for S&S than trying to let a single character carry the ball. Plus there would be room for almost any kind of character, without having to choose one.

I think the editors would have to make the call, and put together the package. Then we'd have to post the package (if we are going to have open subs for a slot) or take queries (if we are going to invite writers to try their hand one at a time).

Not arguing--just making sure I understand. You think it would, given the frequency with which FS comes out--easier to make a company and setting of characters than it would to make a heroic fantasy version of Doc Savage or the Executioner and have different authors write stories of the character having adventures?

I would think it easier to create an iconic image not overly characterized but perhaps with certain high concept trade marks (special weapon, constant antagonist, etc) than trying to make a redux of T-W (or whatever) given the wordcount and pub frequency.

Again, I'm not saying you're wrong I just think I might be reading 10-degrees left of what you're saying.

Seeing as how FS is booked up for a year, wouldn't it make more sense to look at this as a themed antho?

I get what you're saying Nathan, a character like Bolan that could be used by different authors, I just don't know how practical that is for a 4x a year publication that seems like it gets an abundance of subs as is. Tweaking the idea into a more Thieves World-esque anthology (potential series) seems more doable to me.

billwardwriter.com

Posted By : erazmus - 4/14/2008 3:27 PM
I don't disagree, Nathan.
Easier it would be, a lone character to create. Only four to five times a year, do we publish. (Talk like Yoda, I have only started to.) But would it be better? A feature in F-S it might be, but that isn't the only thing we do. We could post such stories up to the web-page, we could bring out an anthology of tales, we could do more than one thing. We could bring out a comic, start a pod cast, put it on a t-shirt. We (or CW anyways, its her company) could get an agent to pitch the resulting idea to Hollywood. Not all these things are equally likely, but they are possible.
So its best to think over and find the best idea, the one with greatest potential. It occures to me we could do both ideas, character and company, not necc. at the same time, but it would be easy to tie them together. This would be a work-for-hire type of thing, obviously. Kelly would be the holder of rights, and I'd imagine she would like something exploitable. Something to draw in readers to Flashing Swords magazine and also F-S's other projects. Readers are key to everything, what will bring them in, and hold on to them? What will get us talked about?
I'll tell you what the hardest thing to do in publishing at this level is-- getting anyone to notice. SFReader and its forums are a great place, there are a lot of people here doing great things. But taking the next step, getting beyond the terrific group of fans and creators here and actually selling our stuff to people we don't "know" is tough. And we have to do it, if we are going to survive as more than an expensive Hobby for Kelly. So any idea we decide to run with has to have the best potential to go places. Of course, if we end up going places, it would be nice to take our friends along.
A danger is trying to do too many things and ending up doing none well enough to accomplish the main goal-- running a sustainable company. Right now everything has to go toward building what we have-- Flashing Swords, and Return of the Sword and other projects. I like this idea because it can fit in to what we are doing easily while being expandable on its own.
Mack Bolan ended up with the Pheonix Force and Stoneyman, right? I'm liking a character and Company together right now.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I meant. I Slaine or a Judge_Dred or a Phantom who has a story in every issue written by a solicited guest writer. Than character then becomes a flagship icon for FS art work and promotion.

It seems more definate a thing to hang a marketing creation around than a shared setting or a multitude of characters would strike me as too difuse. At publishing FS 4x a year(?) It'd take 3 years for the characters to be used over enough to get an identiy and a city or a landmass or a time period isn't a very structured "hook". Someone skipping an issue or two might not realize they're reading a story set in the same place.

It would seem that 4 stories a year about the same iconic character would be more identifiable than 4 stories set in the same city. Or even about 4 characters who happen to know each other--if that makes sense.

But--I'm just elaborating on my original spitball. I'm not saying the other's wouldn't work, not at all. Just that I think one character might be more efficent.

Making the whole of each issue a new shared world anthology might work as well. Just talking it out.

I take your point, and the art considerations are not minor. We have a real challenge matching art to stories in a timely fashion, and having an iconic character of our own would allow us to commission pointed art tied in to content with a longer range.

Not to rain on the parade (because I like the idea), but to look at this from the business end, how much of a benefit could this really be to FS?

Just some things to consider:

If FS is already getting plenty of subs and the editors are happy with the subs and the product, why tie down one story slot each issue?

Would a quarterly publication be able to create a draw for a serial character?

Would kicking things off with an antho be best? Then follow up with a story in each issue? And maybe another antho every so often?

"Peter Piker the Pankin Man" upcoming at Big Pulp

DB, love this part of spitballing, the give and take as people begin working through problems. The downside on the i-net is that it can comes across as arguing. I think you raised valid points so I'm going to try and answer them to see how they sound to you--not refutiate them. Not arguing here--round tabling.

If FS is already getting plenty of subs and the editors are happy with the subs and the product, why tie down one story slot each issue? --they have plenty of subs and the editors like the work then the pool of talent has increased to draw from. You tie down the slot to work toward building something bigger--something closer to marketing concepts.

Would a quarterly publication be able to create a draw for a serial character? Sure. Ecspecially if it were high concept enough that it came with a visual art refernece point used a lot. Would 8 issues a year or 12 work better? Yes. But the concept becomes tied into the artwork--synergy exists even with only 4 issues.

Would kicking things off with an antho be best? Then follow up with a story in each issue? And maybe another antho every so often?

What/who is bigger, more name recognized? Judge Dredd or the magazine 2000 AD. Conan or Weird Tales? Gold Eagle Publishing or Mack Bolan the Executioner, heck Superman belong to DC or Marvel? (we know, but your man on the street might be a little less sure as icons like Superman and Batman get folded into Spiderman and Captain America).

By tying the magazine to an icon you get synergy. Anthos are cool. I buy anthos. I've never seen Mattel make an action figure out of an anthology (meant in the symbolic).

I'm painting big pictures and generalized statements (I don't expect Cyberwizard P. to come out with an action figure line just right yet of course) to say that if you give something tried and true in the ICONIC FIGURE a chance to work with something tried and true like The Popular Periodical you might create a type of synergy (last time I use that word, promise) you couldn't get from simply stories and anthologies.

Might not make a lick of difference as well, admittedly. But tying down that slot each issues is good for solicited writer and its good for the pub 'cause with a known entity you don't have to rely on the vagarcies of the slush. It's the same thinking that sends Media Tie-In work to known published authors over fan fiction forums. Not because there aren't some hell-ah talented unkowns--but because on any given slush go around you don't know what you're going to get.

Just thoughts off the top of my head. Not adamant arguments complete with pounding keyboards. Hope that came across okay.

Good to know, I just like to double check how I'm coming across.

I think it could be summed up in a pro con way. Pro (as in if it works on any level) = alright to fabulous results.

Con - the idea does nothing, moves nothing = no real damage.

You have a slot given over to a heroic fantasy story that would have went to another heroic fantasy story -- probably the 'weakest' one since you still have open original story slots.

So an unkown doesn't get a shot and a guy/gal known by FS editors gets a guarenteed sale because of a solicitation. That sucks ( a little, it's only 1 story) for the would be sale the hypothetical slush author would have gotten.

But, from the publications viewpoint it's neither here nor there. Even for nonplussed readers its really neither here nor there, it's still just 1 story.

Just thoughts--I'll bow out a bit so I don't seem like a chimp on a table screaming "my way" (in chimpaneze of course) and let the thought marinate a bit.

start a pod cast,

I'd love to do podcasts in conjunction with the magazine. I'm not sure I'd want to try to do the entire magazine, but if some of the authors would like to record themselves reading their stories and let us host them on the FS website, that would be very cool.

A full-blown podcast would also be cool, but I don't have the equipment for it. Anyone want to volunteer?

We (or CW anyways, its her company) could get an agent to pitch the resulting idea to Hollywood. Not all these things are equally likely, but they are possible.

You're the media editor, Mike. How about you look into what that would entail and let me know what you find out?

I'll tell you what the hardest thing to do in publishing at this level is-- getting anyone to notice.

which is why the same girl that's doing the promotions for RotS is going to start promotions for each issue of FS.

That's also why we are now listed with all the other SF/Fantasy print mags on the Locus Online site :)

Noticed that today--- certainly a first step to bigger recogniction. Although, the first time Locus mentioned my name they spelled it wrong. I have said ever since that if I ever get a Locus cover I'll insist on them using the same incorrect spelling :)

Yep :) And I'll be sending stories from our issues in to the Years Best Fantasy folks as we go through the year. Trying to get us out there to as many places as possible.

I would GREATLY appreciate contact information for places to send either pdf or print copies of FS to. Not just reviewers but places like Locus Online who will list us. If anyone reading this has that sort of information, please email it to me.

Uh...  Oh.  I thought you already had a "Signature Character".  I mean, how about that barbarian-looking guy with the horned helmet and the 2 swords on the Flashing Swords Press logo on RoTS?  He looks nice and iconic.  All ya need now is a name and a personality.  ...Possible sidekicks/companions.  ...Plots.  You know, minor stuff.  :)

Oh yeah.  And what about that minstel guy on the FS homepage, lounging next to the title?  Give that guy a name and a personality and SHAZAM! ya got 2 characters already.  Maybe he's tagging along to get inspiration for ballads or something.

You know Dungeoneer, in a way you're more than right to point that logo out. I'm looking at it on my business cards right now and realizing it's on everything FSP-related - the book, the letterhead, the business cards, the t-shirts. Dude's already got a presence, he just needs a name and some stories.

But then I realize that he's the FSP logo. Mikos logo is the FS logo - and there's 2 guys in that one. Not to mention the bard you also point out! Seems we're already set up to do the combo - FSP runs with the barbarian logo as its signature icon, while FS runs with its 3 characters as the nucleus of a group.

We've lots to discuss, obviously, and 4 already existing characters to relook at. Whatcha all think?

I think you are onto something there Jason... With a bit of brainstorming, something could be hammered to create the icons of the product lines.

Yes, well, the problem is Tim, those characters are nameless, have no character sketches and nothing else. Just images at the moment. So they're 'signature' but pretty 2 dimensional. Hard to write a story about any of them without a lot of design yet.

I'm coming in late, but I wanted to echo support for the idea of an iconic "house" character as opposed to a shared-world feature in each issue. The former seems more easily marketable and more easily doable.

Having been involved in a bit of shared-world stuff, I can vouch that there is a tremendous amount of groundwork involved just in setting up the parameters. With a single-character hook, you just need a good bio and a bit of the world to start. And you get a nifty character to use in ads, T-shirts, etc.

I think it's a very cool idea.

Alright folks: What do y'all think of the logo barbarian holding the crossed swords over his head?

'Course we can't really begin writing tales about him, but is he worth learning about? giving a name to? finding out why he's holding them swords there like that?

Impromptu, informal poll.

Yes

but

shouldn't you ask the artist if he's already got any ideas about the character?

I'm more than willing to hear Mike's input, love to get a grip on his thoughts - but like you referenced upstream - the FS team is the deciding factor - we own the logo image. It's no different than if we allow some author to create us a character and then try to put a face on him/her - we would own the character, we could make it look anyway we desired. Though I'd accept the author's input in just the same fashion.

start a pod cast,

I'd love to do podcasts in conjunction with the magazine. I'm not sure I'd want to try to do the entire magazine, but if some of the authors would like to record themselves reading their stories and let us host them on the FS website, that would be very cool.

A full-blown podcast would also be cool, but I don't have the equipment for it. Anyone want to volunteer?

I am very seriously considering this. As I work on ideas for an audio ad for Return of the Sword, there may be a completely non-official sampler episode created. There are some quality podcasts that are published once a month, like Parsec award winner Variant Frequencies. So, I am thinking about a monthly series, with one story per episode, maybe a poem, and a bit of promotional jibber-jabber at the end. I am a huge fan of Escape Pod, so I at least have some idea what to shoot for as a listener, plus I have some gear and an endless supply of original music.

The only issue is that it would mean giving up one day per month to make the podcast, probably more. My real creative priority right now is working on my novels (WiP just broke 57k!), so I need to give it some more thought. I will make the ad and a test episode at any rate, just for the heck of it.

It would of course, be much easier if everyone had access to a good recording setup, but the worst thing we could do is to put out a cast with mediocre sound quality.

So there it is, that's what I've been chewing on.

Check out my story "Cold Snap" in Lords of Justice from Carnifex Press. It's an anthology of kick-ass super hero novellas.

Time out.  Ok.  FS is the mag.  FSP is the book line.  FS has it's own logo?  Where is it?  What is it?  I don't recall ever seeing it.  Or at least, not knowing it was the logo when I saw it.

Um, not to be a smart aleck or anything, but I thought that's what this thread was supposed to be about?  Figuring out the details we all wanted the icon character(s) to represent?
So, you want a character sketch?  K, it's gotta start somewhere, so how's this?
The guy with the crossed swords...he's Kromag the Mountain Man.  He's not really a barbarian, he's an intellectual from a civilized kingdom, he went off to study some 'barbarian' society and decided he liked it.  Now he's denounced his home kingdom and is tryingto prove himself worthy of the barbarian tribe, who probably don't really want him.
Uh, he cries at love ballads.  He's got a growing dependency on the addictive jinkarra root.  And is allergic to bee stings.  What else is there about him?  I don't know, but there must be more.  There ya go, add details, change details, with all the authors on these forums we should be able to come up with something good inside a week.
Next!

Anyway, I came to and read your post, Jason.  I gotta say, Miko's logo sounds really cool!  But, where is it?  I've been all over the website (I think) and thru issues 8+9 and don't see it.  It must be hiding from me.  Please, is there a link to where it's posted so I can have a look-see?
