| Posted By : JFCC - 9/12/2005 4:47 PM | I'm enjoying it, but then, I'm not all that hard to please. The best characters by far are the two soldiers, Lucius Vorenus and Titus Pollo, and Atia. I do like the portrayal of Octavian as a little Doogie Howser, though.
The performances are good, though the story so far is a bit thin (and familiar). Hopefully that will get better as the series progresses.

I don't agree that the story is thin particularly--I think they are still sort of introducing characters and subplots (like the infidelity of Niobe, for instance), but I do agree with the familiarity. Tts hewed much more closely to being a historical drama (The Fall of the Republic) than a drama set in a historical era (like DEADWOOD). I would also say the writing is not quite as nuanced or snappy as Deadwood, though better than mmuch of network TV.
I have read that it took a hiatus from shooting after the 3rd episode and they did a little retooling. Maybe it will get better for that reason. Still, I think its well worth watching as is. |
