Reading the submissions and doing copyediting for Black Dragon, White Dragon was a piece of cake. Bill and I left the window open for Magic & Mechanica longer than I really wanted to, but it produced some good material. I wasn't worried about the extension because copyediting BDWD was so easy I knew we could easily get everything ready for the October release I had planned.

Well, that may have been naive (and you may freely translate "may have been" to mean "was"). We are in the third week of September with the finished book one of Magistria not yet in my hands, BDWD still not perfect, and M&M only just beginning the editing phase.

I've never done this before, and when I set my timeline back in January I felt three months from ending all reading periods to having finished product was more than enough time (heck, I even looked through the rose-colored glasses and called it a September/October release in case I was finished early). I now know that's impossible and have been fighting the denial of it for a few weeks.

So I will officially make the announcement Ricasso Press will not have its doors open in October. Truth be told, I don't know how long this limbo-like wrapping up time takes, but I plan on having books on virtual shelves before the end of the year. I'm going to pour the majority of my obsessive compulsive disorder into getting this done and will keep everyone updated throughout the process.

I want to second that, Rob. You (and Mr. Ward, as well) have been more than fair with my own personal brand of insanity. While I don't enjoy getting rejections, I've been more than happy with our correspondence and your professionalism.

Which means, of course, that I plan to torture you with more of my writing when you announce another anthology. freaked

Rob, two things:
1. Having been writing for some years, I have to say that your policy of being completely open with your writers is really a breath of fresh air. I don't think anyone is going to begrudge you a month or two to fine tune your antho. On the contrary - writers want to appear in high quality forums.
2. Hope to have something for the new antho as soon as guidelines are announced! It's great that you've got another project on tap.

Thanks so much for the update.

Since I am a new writer, and you are printing my firstborn in your anthology BDWD, I am sitting at the edge of my chair, breathlessly waiting for the first copies.  But I will force myself to be patient, because all babies need clean didies and need to be powdered and sweet smelling when company arrives.

New anthology, hmm.  I have a story of an everyman who hooks up with a magician whose hiding in the woods and they are forced to flee a monster and lead it away from civilization.

Wonder if it will fit.  I guess I'll just have to send it when you open submissions.

good luck as you go through the rest of the publishing process.

Me too. The long and the short of it is, I'm having issues most likely related to an obsessive need to limit my mistakes to two or less. I should really just say to hell with it and get what I have out there, but it seems stupid to do it half-assed (either perfect or all-assed, I say).

Apologies for the very long delay. I'd really like to have my first projects out the door before I ask for subs for another. Damn, though, I want to see what you all have waiting to send to me for Through Blood and Iron.

Rob,

As a suggested fix, send it to someone to do a final proof on, and when they send it back just accept their changes and send it to the printer.

Posted By : Pagadan - 4/7/2008 12:58 AM
I made a list of typos and broken lines when I went through my story collection, and tonight I typed them up in hopes that the editor could fix them for the next time. I wish I'd caught those typos sooner, BUT someone said that you can edit forever, and I know that's true.

Hi Rob.  Just looking for an update.  Is your anthology still going to happen?  Be a shame if you couldn't swing the publication after all the work you've already put into it, but I understand the pitfalls of single-player publishing.  Hope all is well.

Joy and Jerry, thanks for the continuing interest. I've lost hope with the publisher I'm working with, a local guy who was willing to do stuff for me at the right price, the right timeline, the right everything. It's not looking like it's happening, and I will spend tomorrow putting files together for another publisher. I'll have more info shortly.

Hi all,

Sorry, I've spoken about this in other places, just not specifically here on this thread. Forgive my not thinking you would have attached email notifications to here and nowhere else.

My local printer basically defaulted on the project after me pouring tons of time and effort into giving a small businessman a shot. I am working with an online printer right now and will have copies in hand shortly ("shortly" is as accurate as I can be right now).

As clearly as I can say it, the project is not dead only woefully delayed. I understand when projects take long times to wrap up they tend to disappear. That is not the case here. Authors and prospective readers have been inhumanly patient, and I thank you for it. Where the light at the end of the tunnel turned out to be an oncoming train before, the light this time is an actual exit.

Just as a little extra incentive, I've got a thumbnail of the BD,WD cover on my website (with a link to Ricasso, natch!), and for some reason Google has it as the second result if you search Google Images for "Black Dragon White Dragon."  I get a LOT of visits to my site from people searching for just that.  So there's a lot of interest out there for the anthology!

I can't wait to read the whole thing, myself. :)

Well, progress was made, though not exactly what i wanted to do. The irony of it all is I was trying not to take this approach, but if I'd had, everything for Ricasso Press would have been on book shelves in about a week.

I already related my tale of woe with a local printer who I wanted to give some business, and he let me down. I then contacted an online printer with very good rates that, after two months, still hadn't provided me with a draft copy. Sigh.

So i went through Lulu. I had a very specific pricepoint in mind for my books, and using Lulu means I either change the price (not very likely) or run a lower return on investment. But it will have exposure through a site that's already set up. My own website will have other materials (such as e-books and perhaps audio versions) plus, of course, access to the Lulu bookstore.

In short, the printing work is done. I should have books in hand in a few days.

Thanks for the patience everyone.

I'm glad to hear that, and not just because one of my little stories will be in it.  Sticking to it and finding alternates to your original plan when people let you down shows real character, when it would have been easy to just throw up your hands and walk away from the project.

On the bright side, not only will you have a fine anthology out there, you should be able to use it as a reference the next time you shop around for a publisher and maybe get a better deal.  That is, if you aren't burnt out by now.

Looking forward to buying copies.

Rob,

Thank you for persevering! I can only imagine how tedious, frustrating, and aggravating the whole process has been. Lulu is easier to work with, I think, though not as profitable. I believe their quality is good, and as Jerry said, you might get a better deal in the future, and you'll have the product in hand to show people.

Appreciatively, Joy

*jumps around with excitement*

That's great!  I can't wait to see it and read everyone's stories!  I've been impressed with all the Lulu books I've seen (I even used them once for a collection of comics I put together for friends), so I'm sure the result will be good.

Hi Rob!

As soon as you let us know the copies are ready I'll be sending for mine. I've even talked to my local library about starting a "Local Authors" shelf, though I guess that would limit the number of copies sold. Hopefully it may get a few more people interested in the work of us struggling and lesser-known authors.

I'll add both Magistria titles to the bookmarks I'm working on and mention them elsewhere.

Today marks Day One of running to the mailbox looking for copies. Macy's is having a clearance sale, and my copy of Family Fun magazine has tips for Halloween. Oh, and the dentist sent me a reminder postcard for Monday's appointment. No copies, though.

On the plus side, I think I'll go to Macy's tomorrow.

Rob,

I certainly appreciate the hard work and time you've put into Ricasso Press and these anthologies. Too bad about the covers, but it's good that you can revise the files later. Thank you and Congratulations! I look forward to seeing the Ricasso Press website and the anthologies.
