I'm a little more than halfway through this book, and so far I'm blown away. Definitely the best novel I've read in a while.

For some reason I've not figured out yet, the writing reminds me a little of Heinlein.

A great book--post back when you've read it all; I don't want to drop any spoilers.

Way better than the movie, goes without saying.

I was surprised by how scifi it was, again just going off having seen the movie first.

Have you read Brin's Startide Rising? Brilliant book.

No, this was my first Brin novel. But I think I'll be seeking out more.

And yep, I was surprised by how much of a sci-fi element there was, too.

Yes, thank you for putting out the recommendation for this one, Ed; I'm very happy to have followed it. The Postman is a very different take on post-apocalyptic science fiction to any I've read. The strength of ideas made for a very powerful theme, and Brin writes it brilliantly. The genius of it, I think, is that he shows so much power in idealism, but always filters it through a healthy pessimism.

I didn't like how he would occasionally start a chapter by skipping ahead in time and then narrating all the interesting parts in flashback for no apparent reason, but that was absolutely the only flaw I saw in this novel.
