has anyone else read this?
or any of her other books?

neil gaiman mentioned he was a fan
on his blog so i decided to check her
out. altho not first in the series,
i could only find privilege of the sword
on the bookshelf.

i truly enjoyed it.

it was unlike any fantasy i'd read
before--no magic, no fantastic critters,
just a few swordplay scenes, lots of
great dialogue and political intrigue.

she really shows a writer how one
can have tension and conflict in a novel
without the "explosions".

anyway, i'd count swordspoint as one
of my favorite fantasy books now.
up their with le guin's earthsea series.

I read that one many years ago, and remember little about it - except that I liked it enough to keep the book for a re-read sometime.

Very enjoyable book. As you say it is quite different from the usual fantasy fare. I have not read the sequel yet, but it is on my wish list. The author's choice of setting and the way she brings it alive in the text is really excellent. This book is a keeper for the details of swordplay, training and duels as well.

anthony and bryan, i'm glad you two enjoyed
the books as well. tho the plot wasn't simple,
i felt kushner's novel was definitely character
driven.

i also recommend privilege of the sword.

read it if you want something different than the
usual fantasy story.
