I'm reading "The Black God's Kiss" by C.L. Moore, it's part of the Planet Stories line that Paizo Publishing is coming out with.
 
So far, I like it a lot.  Moore's writing is as moody as I've heard it was, and Jirel, while a strong warrior-princess type, is still undeniably female.  (It bugs me when the swordswoman in a story could be replaced by a guy and it wouldn't affect the story one bit.)  Haha, I'm anxious to read more of Moore!
 
I'm also anxious to read more from Planet Stories.  They are collecting stories from Leigh Brackett, Henry Kuttner, and R.E. Howard from old pulps.  These are stories and/or authors I've heard a lot about, but have been difficult to find.  A big thanks to the folks at Black Gate for their interview with Paizo's Eric Mona--that's how I found out about this great...line?  Series?  Collection?  Uh, that's how I found out about it!

The Jirel of Joiry stories are fantastic (in every sense of the word). The ever reliable Gollanz produced a wonderful edition - Black Gods and Scarlet Dreams - in their Fantasy Masterworks series in the UK that collected both the Jirel and Northwest Smith stories.

The same line also collects a bunch of Leigh Brackett stories under the title of Sea Kings of Mars and Otherwordly Stories. The Fantasy Masterworks (and SF Masterworks) series is just wonderful - collecting new editions great writers from Poul Anderson through to Roger Zelazny.

Crackin' good stuff.

I'm looking forward to diving into this book. The extra rarely-seen tale, which I don't have, sold me. I plan on getting it, along with Elak of Atlantis and Almuric, at the very least.

Good to get some feedback from readers to reinforce my decision.

Me three. :)

I've read some of the Jirel tales via TOR's Echoes of Valor but not all. Also looking forward to the Moorcock Mars series and the Northwest Smith collection.

Some I am going to skip, only because I have the stories already (Brackett's Ginger Star, Hounds of Skaith and Howard's (reputed) Almuric.) Otherwise I am definitely expanding my bookshelf for these Planet Stories.

Yeah the Jirel stories are a good read.

Out of those you mentioned, while I love the original Howard stories, I've got to say I like Leigh Brackett the best.
Her Eric John Stark stories mix sci-fi with sword fantasy so well.

Where ever would I be without the Jirel stories?
And stylisticly, overall the Planet Stories feel is what I aim for. Only maybe with fewer exclamation marks. :)
