i am currently rereading this trilogy.

i just finished the first book, and was surprised

by thte lack of magic in the tale.

it is def based a lot on military life

and action. impressive. but then,

moon was in the marines.

anyone else read this trilogy?

By her account, that's why Jim Baen took a second look at it. I thought I'd saved a link to that interview, but I'm not finding it. Very funny, though.

Yes, according to her bio, Moon was in the Marines. She has had quite a few life experiences, and those come into play in her books.

My favorites include the ones about Esmay Suiza, a young military officer in the same universe as her Herris Serano series. I especially liked "Once a Hero" and "Rules of Engagement" which center on military matters. However, her characters are fully fleshed out, unlike some writers of military fiction. The way young Suiza deals with the issues that cross her path are a bit like classic "coming of age" yarns, but her situations and plot complications are more sophisticated than what's typical in such tales.

Moon has experience in medicine and politics, which gives her even more to draw on as she creates her stories. I've read most of her books, and I am seldom disappointed.

Cindy - there's a bit more magical things happening in mmm I think the 3rd book, if memory serves. I've read this series a couple or three times, but many years ago. Might be time for a reread - I enjoyed it quite a bit.
