Just finished re-reading (after a gap of decades) The Weirdstone of Brisingamen by Alan Garner. This was the 'Harry Potter' of the 1960s, only better: written for children, but well-written enough to grip adults. Some Tolkienesque elements, but with a real, contemporary setting in Cheshire and starring two ordinary children (brother and sister) who unwittingly become the focus of a huge good vs evil battle with wizards, witches and various inhuman beings. Highly recommended - and still available. There's a full review on my blog.

Also suggest the sequels that follow: THE MOON OF GOMRATH, THE OWL SERVICE, ELIDOR, RED SHIFT. Here's a good site: http://members.ozemail.com.au/~xenophon/bio.html

that's an excellent book. I loved it. Now I need to dig out my copy and re-read it.

I have no skeletons in my closet, they are all hanging from the yardarm.

Once there were three brothers, Brandrahoon the vampire, Isranon called the Dawnhand, speaker to spirits, and Waejonan the Accursed, first of sa’necari. Isranon defied his brothers and was destroyed, his descendants forced into the darkness.
