I am now reading Dragondoom, one of Dennis McKiernan's Mithgar series, and am enjoying it alot. Alot of action, excellent character development, enticing story with several different plots, combine to keep my interest. Certainly, he's no Tolkien, though he aims to follow in his footsteps, but its a nice read and just a great break from the humdrum of the daily grind.

It's a fun enough read, though I got pretty tired of the word 'whelmed' by the end of it.

Yes, he has a way of using some terms over and over again, often words he has made up himself from real words, and it does get old sometimes indeed.

I like McKiernan's earlier work, but haven't read anything of his in a long time. In particular, I like that he is not only willing to kill off main characters, but he's willing to make their quests pointless. Knowing that keeps a reader on his toes.

I've never read the man, but I've just gotta ask:  How could a pointless quest keep me on my toes?  It sounds boring to me.  I like authors that are willing to take risks, to shock me, to kill off characters of any level (permanently, no 'resurrections'), and try all things under the sun.  But quests are fairly boring as it is, so to send me off on one that doesn't even matter sounds like a quick way to send me questing for new reading material.
