An Encyclopedia of Fairies, Hobgoblins, Brownies, Bogies, and Other Supernatural Creatures by the folklorist Katharine Briggs has been an extremely influential book in my life.  It's where I first encounters the darker tales from traditional fairy lore.  It's where I first learned that the fairy realm contained some pretty nasty characters like Black Annis, Yallery Brown, and red caps.  It's where I first discovered that even "good" fairies have a darker side.

I first read this book in junior high school, and the tales and descriptions of the creatures stuck with me.  I found the book again recently, and it's been a great help in composing my poems and tales inspired by the darker side of fairy.

That's one of my favs too. Also high school. I think she had quite an influence on Alan Lee and Brian Froud's book FAERIES.

I think she did have a huge influence on Faeiries.  That's another one of my favourites.  It does a good job of portraying the fair folk as beings of twilight, with a definite darker side.

I have always adored that book. I need to replace my copy. My daughter ran off with mine a few years ago. When I tried to get it back, she wheedled me into making it a gift to her. One of a huge stack of books that I was wheedled out of.

Once there were three brothers, Brandrahoon the vampire, Isranon called the Dawnhand, speaker to spirits, and Waejonan the Accursed, first of sa’necari. Isranon defied his brothers and was destroyed, his descendants forced into the darkness.

Yeah, I think there will be a battle in this household for that book once my daughter moves away from home.  I think I will have to find another copy of it when that day comes.

My daughter's more of a bibliophile than I am, and that's saying a lot!  Reading is probably her favourite activity.
