Just picked up the following books from the Milwaukee Central Library's Annual 10-cent sale, all in hardcover and some without any library markings!;-)

1. Death in Rome Robert Katz - One of the most horrible and still controversial episodes in WWII, the Ardeatine Caves massacre of 335 Romans.

2. Silence on Monte Sole Jack Olsen - The SS massacre of an Italian hill village of 1,800 civilian in WWII.

3. Normandy to the Baltic Field Marshal The Viscount Montgomery - Operations of the 21st Army Group in Northwest Europe June 1944-May 1945.

4. The Last Convertible Anton Myrer - No idea what it's about, but since Myrer's Once an Eagle is one of the best books ever written, I pick up anything with his name on it. His The Big War was good too.

5. The Best Short Stories of WWII: An American Anthology edited by Charles A. Fenton - With Benet, Faulkner, Jones, Ellison, Michener, Shaw, Mailer . . . how could I go wrong?

6. St. Michael and the Dragon: Memoirs of a Paratrooper Pierre Leulliette - A Frenchman's account of the Algerian war of independence and 'a heart-rending commentary on all war.'

7. The Second Book of Lost Swords: Sightblinder's Story Fred Saberhagen - Haven't read this series yet, so for a dime I thought I'd start.

8. The Scorpio Illusion Robert Ludlum - Rounding out my hardcover collection of one of the best espionage authors ever!

9. The Earp Brothers of Tombstone: The Story of Mrs. Virgil Earp Frank Waters - First dictated by Mrs. Virgil Earp, then 'verified and amplified' by the author.

10. Great Western Stories edited by Bill Pronzini & Martin H. Greenberg - Again, with Twain, Harte, Henry, London, Brand, Grey, Short, Guthrie, Jr., Leonard, Fisher, Jakes, and L'Amour - how could I go wrong?

For never knowing what I'll find at these sales, I feel pretty good about this $1.00 haul. hop

Speaking of bastards . . . .how was the game night, oh Dungeon Masters?! devil devil My money's on Armand's son. lol

Oh, and here's another twist of the knife . . . another haul I received today, from someone at work who cleaned house and gave these 14 to me:

Douglas Adams' The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and The Restaurant at the End of the Univers

Robert Ludlum's The Bourne Supremacy , The Aquitaine Progression , The Parsifal Mosaic , The Matarese Circle , The Gemini Contenders , The Bourne Identity

Franz Kafka's The Castle

Antoine de Saint Exupery's The Little Prince

Harvard Lampoon's Bored of the Rings

Stephen R. Donaldson's The Power That Preserves

Ray Bradbury's R is for Rocket

and Nebula Award Stories Seven edited by Lloyd Biggle, Jr. in hardcover.

I've read many of these and didn't already have them; I've been casually looking for a few of these; some of these I many never read (like Biggle and Kafka). Point is, another trove of books in decent condition magically fell my way, this time simply by going to work today (and here I almost called in sick! To think!). skull

Oh, and before I forget, I received via post yesterday some more books, all stamped with the Carnifex Press imprint . . . roll

Oh, Armand?

I could have posted each book separately in a diabolical plot to overtake your bragging rights . . . but I refrained from such childish behavior.

Another greathaul? Sonofa...

The D&D game was great and my son had a great time... I fear he'll end up a geek like his father, but oh well...

Anytime you can make it down to Florida from the Cold Waste of the Frozen Tundra, Jason, there will be a spot at the table for another player... just bring some chips and soda with you.

We had 2 bags of tortilla chips and salsa, 3 bags of potato chips and dip, 3 cans of Pringles, 2 boxes Chips Ahoy cookies, Frank's wife made Rice Krispies Treats, a box of Toblerone, 6 2-litres of soda (incl. Coke, Dr Pepper, Sprite and my fave Champagne Cola)... and a box of Entenmann's chocolate donuts...

Didn't eat it all but we damn well tried... and keep your fingers away from Frank when he's digging into the chip bowl, lol

We didn't eat all of it... at least not last night. I think a bag of chips might be left, my kids went wild with the snacks today...

Yea, verily, t'was a most joyous occasion and our characters did frolic merrily through the fields of shadow goblins.

I've read some of those titles, Mr Waltz.

Bored of the Rings was very enjoyable, especially when he went on about the mushrooms.

The Little Prince I've read in both French and English and it is delightful in either language.

I've read most of the stories contained in R Is For Rocket (they were reprinted in other collections from Bradbury).

And, of course, I've read the Hitchhiker's Guide series. The first one was the funniest and each successive volume was a bit less funny than the last. With the first one I was laughing out loud on almost every page but by the fourth and fifth books I only got an occasional chuckle.

The only Kafka I've read is Metamorphosis but I vaguely remember a good film adaption of The Castle, or was that The Trial? Hmmm...I'm thinking now that was an adaption of The Trial with Anthony Hopkins and Kyle McLaughlin.

If you're not going to read the anthology edited by Biggle then perhaps we can trade? Just name a title you want and I'll tell you if I have it and our books can cross in the mail.

Mr. Waltz now, is it? Whatta ya want? cool

I do believe there is someone on this forum looking for a French reader . . .

Sadly, I must agree on Hitchhiker's - in fact, though I have the 5th book here on the shelf, I must admit to never reading it. Yet. But I also gotta admit that '42' sure does answer a lot, hey? lol

sounds good to me. I'll even send along the Kafka one, if you'd like. While I mean to read it, I just know I either never will or it will be in about 37 years. Not knowing exactly what you carry, here's some things I'm trying to complete:

~ERB's Tarzan books in hardcover - I've got 14 of 'em but looking for the rest
~Barry Sadler's Casca books - I've got 17 of 'em . . .
~I've been trying to find Harold Lamb's biographies, in hardcover if possible. I have 2 in hardcover, 2 in paperback, but I'd take either. I read these and fell in love with his writing long before I even knew he wrote short fiction.

That's if off the top of my head, but I'll mail these out to ya - Private Message me your address.

Thanks Frank!

I don't have any of those titles. What else might you be into? My hard covers and trade paperbacks are mostly SF but there is a fair amount of fantasy mixed in. I also have a bunch of ex-library non-fiction, including books on science, history, history of science, nature, mythology, etc. My poetry section is growing as well. Perhaps this would be easier on the phone so I can name off a bunch of titles at once and you can say STOP! when you hear one you're willing to trade for the Biggle anthology.

My primary interests are Fantasy, WWII history, mythology, biographies, but the phone call sounds good.

Jason and Frank,

Hey, I can't have you two talking on the phone and cutting out the middle man - me!

Once you guys start going, you'll make fun of me and realize what a jackasss I am and then no one will have his wife make Rice Krispie Treats...

I promise to have more fresh crispie treats when next we meet, and I might even have her use Kraft marshmellows instead of the store brand...

Jason,
Far be it from me to come between a willing reader and a Poul Anderson story. If you're even just thinking about reading part of that book then don't send it to me cuz I'll just file it in my stack of thousands. I just greedily gobble books up like the cookie monster attacks a cookie jar...

We can still blab on the phone though...might be fun to shoot the shit about reading and writing and whatnot.

Oh, phew, it's not just me and my wife. I had a hard time finishing the third book and couldn't push on to the fourth and fifth. I had too many books that were actually amusing to read, like "I was Probed by Aliens and Lived to Tell the Tale!"
