Wasn't sure where to post this.

There's a thread down in the Writing section about sword duels. Whenever I try to post a reply there, I get this error message:

it might be a problem with that, yes. Do me a favor, please. Vote in the pole then try to post and tell me what happens.

Posted By : BethS - 4/24/2008 9:21 AM

That seems to have done the trick. Though to be absolutely sure, I suppose I should've first tried posting again without taking the poll, just to see if it was still malfunctioning. Didn't think of that until it was too late, though.

I like that idea, Dave :) Especially a live chat that doesn't time out every 10 seconds unless you're typing the way the one we have right now does.

The photo album would be cool, too, so that our artists could display their work.

What CMSs are you thinking of, Dave? I've had experience with Joomla, Postnuke, Drupal, and a couple others (Wordpress, though I don't think it woudl be an appropriate one for this). Anyway -- those three I mentioned are all pretty solid. Regardless, I vote yes.

I like the email SFReader sends me when there's a new post--it's always been one of the most attractive features about the forums for me. I wouldn't care to sign up for an RSS Feed of every thread I'm watching. I'm not sure I'd use any of the rest of those options.

Could the people responding to this thread please mention which of the new services they'd actually use? Might let Dave get a better handle on what our priorities are.

I had that exact error too. I didn't vote in the poll, use italics or bold. I quote a project Gutenberg entry about Paradise Lost, but as far as I'm aware there wasn't any special formatting.

Dave,
I'd hate it, but thats just me.
Every time I've been active someplace and its changed formats, the place has suffered for it. I'm used to this format, I know my way around, I like it.
Okay, plus the move would wipe out my massive post-count. I'll never be able to keep up with Kelly anyway, but still :-)
Bottom line, what ever you say.
I had to leave a forum I was well known on because I just couldn't handle their new format. Try to get one that works more or less like this board oly better, please. I like being able to see the whole forum at once, for starters.

The platform I'm considering is DotNetNuke

Still evaluating. I'd have to get someone to write custom book review module, as one doesn't currently exist.

I was thinking I could relaunch the main site and keep the forum as is (since it's on a separate subdomain anyway) but that would mean you'd have to log in 2x:

Once to use the forum
And register/log in to use the Portal

I don't think there's a way I could integrate the current forum membership system with the portal....

I MIGHT be able to do a data migration and move all members/posts over from here, but that's just pie in the sky right now.

Dave, there's a couple book review modules out there for some of the other CMS systems I mentioned -- I know there's one for drupal that works pretty well. So I can't imagine it would be too difficult to tweak one for dotnetnuke -- I'm not a php programmer though, so my words should probably be taken with a grain of salt. ;)

I am not computer savvy.  There are terms in your post that are Greek to me.  I think the get what a platform is.  I don't know CMS, portal, or RSS Feed.  But that's OK.
What it comes down to is this:  I like the discussions here, and I think the forum is easy enough to use that even I can do it.  I have little choice but to trust you, CW, and whoever else is behind the scenes running the forums.  I like how you guys have handled things so far, and I trust you.
So I guess if you move the forums I will follow to the new site, or whatever, and see how difficult that is to use.  If I decide I don't like it (and I'd have to REALLY hate it), I'll stop checking it out so frequently.  (Ha!  No more than I post, you probably wouldn't notice, anyway.)
Of course, if the main sfreader site is moving, and the forums are staying the same, that's totally cool with me.  I think I've been to the main site, like, twice.  I come to eavesdrop on the discussions.
Bottom line:  you gotta do what's right for the site, and I (at least) trust ya to do it.

DotNetNuke is in the .Net 2.0 framework - some in C# and some in VB. It alsready does 90% of what I'm looking for, byt before I spend time nad effort on the rest, I wanted to gauger the reaction of the community

  • Live chat that doesn't time out would be a mitzvah.
  • Being able to embed images in posts would be nice.
  • I'm irrationally fond of the pop-up notification for private messages.

So I've inched closer to a possible way ahead

New CMS for main site
Leave forums as is unless I can get all posts and members migrated to new platform

Two more things I could include if I went CMS with the main site:

Auction area where people could sell thier own stuff
Wiki
Media area for posting images/videos etc

I like the concept Dave, all of the concept. But I agree with the masses while simultaneously having the utmost confidence in you to also desire retention of all that is currently here, both the main site and the forum. I think the more we can house here, the better.

I for one, as long as you give me at least a semi-decent choice, will move my blog here right away. I've grown very weary of Wordpress and have been looking at Vox right now, or considering a return to Blogger. If you can give me anything that resembles either of those, I'm yours (not that that's a big scoop or anything, but ya know, I'm there for ya).

I can't help with code other than codes of conduct or honor, sorry.

Long and short of it: regardless of up front labor, if it reduces your daily labor and / or costs related to SFReader I say do it.

Most of the forums I'm on use phpBB, which I like a lot, probably because I am used to it. But it is easy to click and see what post that have hit since your last visit, and I use that feature exclusively. This forum isn't as easy, but doable. One, you have to go down to the bottom to get the link to do that, and two, you have to remember to hit "mark all post as read" before you leave, which I usually remember. And I know I've missed some post in doing that, if they post after I've checked and before I hit that button. The only advantage to it is that I can come on for a quick check or do something, and then leave. With phpBB, you have to check for post since last visit or they will not appear next time. So if I'm in a hurry, this works better.

But overall, I don't use much features, and the features that are here are on phpBB as well, like getting email responses (I rarely use it, I'll find out on my next visit). Most forum systems can do most of that. Also, this forum doesn't show the new post in a time/history format, but according to forum, which makes it hard to see if anything new has hit while you've been on, and before you hit the "mark as read" link. The only other issue that I find a little irritating in this forum is the hang I experience upon opening a post. Not a big deal, but I can't do nothing until it continues on. Happens everytime I open a post, it will hang the browser for about 2-3 seconds before it continues on allows me to open more into tabs. I've not experienced that on the other forums I'm on.

But all in all, I've learned to work with this one. It does okay for what I do. Not my favorite, but I don't expect them all to be. Baring something that is totally screwy, I'm sure I can work with whatever you end up exporting into. But, sorry Jordan, the forum at EDF is not very usable the way I like to work. The recent post link produces confusing results to me. So, I wouldn't suggest that one, though it may be it can be set up in a more usable way.

But it was free!  I've never checked the recent post link at EDF. I subscribe to the forums I want to follow, and it e-mails me when someone posts in them. I do the same thing here. That's why it's rare for me to post in the Ask an Expert or Anything Goes forum. I'm not subscribed to those.

Anyways, I'd prefer if you let us know your concerns, Rick. We have almost all the code to the forums, so if something doesn't work, we can fix it.

Dave, that sounds great.

I've been to plenty different forums, so I wouldn't mind any different software, with one exception. Please, never, ever use Drupal. It's dreadfull, it killed some forums, including Baen's Bar for me and almost took down the huge NaNo-Site last November. They never did get it working properly, either.

All the best for the move! hop

Dave,

If it's a real improvement, yes. But would we lose the history in the transfer?

And maybe this suggestion should be in its own thread. So more members will see it.

~Beth

I actually get that same error on alot of threads using my home computer. If I don't get the error then the page loads indefinately. Which is why I have been scarce lately. I can view threads on my employers dime with no problem. Happily, a new computer is in my future.

Edited to add:

A better live chat would be the bee's knees!

Imbedded images in threads would be awesome.

I already host my art elsewhere as I'm a member of some other art and literature forums, so pic-hosting wouldn't be a big deal for me.

Drupal is the devil!

I frequently visit a number of different forums, and would say that the SFReader system has some irritations.

One of them is that if I copy and paste something from Word, signs like this >>> appear at the end of each paragraph. To get rid of them, I have to delete all of the spaces between paragraphs and restore them again.

Also, the word "lace" is occasionally added next to proper names (but seemingly at random).

As a result of these quirks, I usually have to go back and edit any posts which I've pasted text into - rather annoying, as it doesn't happen on any other forum I visit.

I've also found that if there's a poll and I just want to comment rather than vote, my reponse is thrown out - I found this out the hard way after composing a very long comment which was lost beyond recall (using the back button doesn't recover it in the way that happens on some forums).

Finally, I have to remember to click the "notify of reply postings" box every time; in most forums, you can set this as the default.

Overall, I would welcome moving to a better system, as long as it continues to support signatures, avatars and reply-posting email alerts. I don't, however, want to be bombarded with emails other than for threads I have contributed to, or for private messages.
