Writer Steve Gerber, the talented and frequently hilarious creator of Howard the Duck, lost his battle with pulmonary fibrosis on Sunday. He was 60.
Mr. Gerber wrote some of my favorite comic book stories, including his work on the Defenders. The world is a lesser place without the creator of the cigar chomping duck and the enigmatic Elf with a gun.

Oh damn. I'll miss him.

It's really bad news. Howard the Duck was a brilliant mix of parody, tribute and full-on-weird storytelling. I own a couple issues of his later 'zine Destroyer Duck which are, if anything more hilarious and more bizarre.

I have the “lawsuit” edition of Destroyer Duck, illustrated by Jack Kirby. The book was published to help Gerber raise funds for his lawsuit against Marvel. It was a beautiful book (Kirby drawing ducks with guns!) and contained some great barbs against Marvel.
