This might be in the wrong category, but it concerns a truly world event, WW II. I just watched the first installment of Ken Burns' film about "The War" which is most impressive. Having minored in history and read a bit about this event, I was really impressed with the way Burns' documentary interweaves the known with tales which are largely unknown.

Saw it, too. Most excellent, so far. A great sequence on the Guadalcanal battle -- Burns is up against it with this one, though since there have already been so many exhaustive docs on WW2. He's an ace, but spinning the full series into something new may be a challenge. I'm a ww2 buff, so I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of the documentary plays out.

Yes, that war was the first one to be fully reported. My husband loves the History Channel, and I've often said that they'd run out of material if it were not for all those b/w clips and photos from WII.

I'm from Georgia, and the local paper here had a human interest piece on the lady from Mobile who is featured prominently. She was dating a Ga Tech student who decided to join, and she knew he died in the Pacific, but didn't learn how until some sixty years later.

My daughter is taking a WWII class in high school; they are participating in the project to record the history of this event by interviewing veterans. There is a woman here who was held in a Japanese internment camp in Manilla, so she was the subject of my daughter's video. Even though this lady was only 8 years old when the Japanese took over, she has vivid memories worth preserving. I was especially interested in her appreciation for the young volunteers who liberated the camp.

Burns' film will help preserve the stories, these primary sources of history, that will soon be lost due to the age of the participants.

Ken Burns was on the Daily Show this week. For now, you can find the video clip here. It's a good interview.
