Anybody ever read Cecilia Holland's 'Floating Worlds'?
 
I'm about halfway through and I'm having a blast!
 
Pity this is the only sci-fi book she appears to have written, so far at least.

Some very interesting stuff. I'm not sure if that's the only thing, as she was featured on the cover of Locus a couple of years ago--- I'd have to go back and read the article.
She wrote it a long time ago, at least 20 years.

Yep, it was written in '75. She writes in a very sparse, economical style, and you are expected to fill in the gaps for yourself. There is a large cast, much political intrigue, and a pretty wild mutant race called the Styth.
 
Each chapter contains a lot of information and not a sentence is wasted. It is dense but not hard to read.
 
So why do I like it? Because it is very hard to predict where it is going? Because the female protagonist is smart as hell? Because the prose is finely crafted? All of these, but particularly because her vision of the future is unlike any I've read yet, a real eye opener.

I read it decades ago and recall nothing of the plot - but if I remembered the title and author's name, it must have made an impression on me (a good one, in this case).
