The anthology "Heroes in Training," which I co-edited with Martin Greenberg, is now available for pre-order at Amazon.com!

http://www.amazon.com/Heroes-Training-Martin-H-Greenberg/dp/075640438X/

The book is scheduled for the beginning of September, which means you have a little over 6 months to tell all of your friends :-)

It's possible the order of the stories may change slightly between now and September, but here are the thirteen talented writers who have stories in Heroes in Training:

Roomies
Esther Friesner

Three Names of the Hidden God
Vera Nazarian

The Princess, the Page, and the Master Cook's Son
Sherwood Smith

The Children's Crusade
Robin Wayne Bailey

The Apprentice
Catherine H. Shaffer

Beneath the Skin
James Lowder

Giantkiller
G. Scott Huggins

Drinker
Michael Jasper

King Harrowhelm
Ed Greenwood

Honor is a Game Mortals Play
Eugie Foster

The Wizard's Legacy
Michael A. Burstein

A Touch of Blue: A Web Shifters Story
Julie E. Czerneda

Sir Apropos of Nothing and The Adventure of the Receding Heir
Peter David

---

Four of these stories give the authors a chance to revisit some of their characters/worlds...  So in the interest of going all-out with the author-promo:

Peter David brings us a new tale of Sir Apropos, who has appeared in Sir Apropos of Nothing, The Woad to Wuin, and Tong Lashing.

Julie E. Czerneda's Web Shifters trilogy introduced readers to Esen, who returns in her story here. Czerneda's Web Shifters books include Beholder's Eye, Changing Vision, and Hidden in Sight.

Vera Nazarian's story marks a return to the rich world of her novel Dreams of the Compass Rose.

Finally, Michael Jasper's story provides insight into his aliens the Wannoshay, who appeared in his collection Gunning for the Buddha. Jasper's novel The Wannoshay Cycle should be coming out some time in 2007 from Five Star Books.

In the history of grand adventures and heroic quests, goblinkind has never been more than a footnote. That's about to change....

Sounds very interesting. Is it more fantasy, sci-fi, mix of both or what?

It ended up being a bit heavier on the fantasy side, but there's everything from Esther Friesner's school for princesses to Czerneda's shapeshifting alien Esen.

Sounds like an excellent lineup, Jim. I know Eugie's work from Critter's, Vera I'm familiar with through the boards here, and I've read Beholder's Eye, so I'm familiar with Julie's work. Will it be available in brick-and-mortar stores in September? Don't have the funds to purchase it now, but I'll be sure to look for it when it comes out.

It's a DAW anthology, so most of the brick-and-mortar stores should carry a few copies. And I'm sure I'll be posting another announcement or two as we get closer to the release date :)

Congrats, Jim! Looks like a good line-up. I'm glad to see Sherwood Smith in there. I published a couple of her stories when I used to co-edit MOOREEFFOC Magazine, and I loved her story in Realms of Fantasy "Mom and Dad at the Home Front," which was reprinted in Year's Best Fantasy.

Thanks, Nicholas. Sherwood was delightful to work with. Actually, most of my authors were. It's almost enough to tempt me to do something like this again some day :-)

That really looks like a must buy. Who can resist a book containing a story each by Peter David and George S. Huggins?

I am looking forward to this one!

Of course, the best part of the book is the brilliant introduction, written by yours truly.

But once you've read that, you might as well skim a few of the stories, too :p

I pitched "Villains in Training" as a follow-up anthology, but they passed.  My guess is that the theme was too close to If I Were an Evil Overlord and Places to Be, People to Kill, both of which they already had in the pipelines.

Of course, since I've got stories in both of those anthologies, I'm not complaining too loudly :)

I may pitch a few more ideas their way when and if I come up with anything.  Right now though, I'm pretty swamped with deadlines for novels and a short story...

How about 'sidekicks in training, or how to make the Hero look good despite his many failings.'

Getting close to the release date for Heroes in Training. Not that I'm nervous or anything...

I've been doing mini-chats with some of my authors, talking about what inspired their story and such. I also got to post some great pics. If anyone's interested, those posts are at http://jimhines.livejournal.com/tag/heroes+in+training

I think my favorite pic would be Mike Jasper and his son Drew.
