Well I just found out that I am being ignored. I started using Duotrope about two months after I started submitting like crazy, and needed it to keep track of where I was sending my stuff (now I just use it to keep track of days. I have an Excel spreadsheet for everything else). So a lot of my rejections aren't on there. I don't remember how long they were gone, so I am not going to make something up.
I guess that this really isn't a gripe. I think it's kinda funny though. You just can't get mad at something like that.

How did you find out you were being ignored?

I know because when I first started using Duotrope, I went back in and put in all my stats for the year and the first three happened to be acceptances.
It's all done automatically. I'm sure they have a cut-off percentage of sales vs. rejects, and if a writer tips over the cut-off they stop counting their stats until they tip back. I suppose they have to, though, because I'm sure some people do delete their rejects and only keep their accepts.

I was looking at that stats for one of the markets that I am at, and saw that there was only one pending. The days that one was pending didn't match the days on mine. Then I saw there was one ignored. I really don't mind, since I only use Duotrope to keep track of days out. Thought it was rather funny.

I think it's an excellent resource (the best!) and report all my acceptances & rejections as an anonymous user (though I have an account--I just don't log in anymore). It counts all my anonymous rejections and lists ~BUT IGNORES~ all my anonymous acceptances. When I kept the account current, it ignored my acceptances whenever the total was above 66% (most of the time), so I stopped bothering to report them non-anonymously.
It's still an excellent and amazing tool, and I urge any users who haven't contributed some token monetary amount to do so. Even $5 or $10 makes a difference. | | Back to Top

Jaqhama said...What is duotrope exactly? I looked there other day, I thought it was just a place that listed all the sci-fi and fantasy webzines and mags?
I find it most useful when I'm waiting to hear back on a story out on submission.
For example: if I've had a story on submission to an anthology for a couple months, and I see there are suddenly a half-dozen rejections listed, I know the editor is finally tackling her slushpile. I can also see how many pending responses are listed, which gives a bit of an idea how popular a particular antho was (this gives only a rough idea, as very few writers, relatively speaking, use the Duotrope sub tracking).
Also, if you have a story on submission to a market which has response times reported well after you subbed them, you can hypothesize your piece is being held for further consideration. You can also study search stats (how many people, exactly, are trying to find pro-paying markets for horror flash fiction?), or response times (knowing my own hatred of excessive response times, do I really want to send my story to a market which takes 200 days to respond? Or should I consider sending that story to the market with the 35 day average response time instead?).
It's quite addictive actually, as the information is continually updated.
Ralan's and Storypilot are each excellent, too, and provide different sorts of information. (Ralan's is great because it lists editors by name, for example; and Storypilot is handy if you need a shortcut to finding all SFWA-qualifying markets.) | | Back to Top
