Sigh.
About ten years ago I wrote a comical short story, sort of a modern fairy tale. It's called "Peter Piker the Pankin Man." In that ten years I have managed to have that story accepted at no less than five different small-circ magazines. Every single time, within a few months of the story's acceptance, the magazine has gone under.
I just found out today it's happened again.
Will I every get this darn thing in print?
Anybody else have similar experiences?

Ty: I had that happen once, many years ago, with a Spider John story.

If I remember correctly, "Peter Piker" is quite short ... if it's 1,000 words or less, there still is time to submit to "Raven Electrick." (Details at Ralans.com). I know Raven is still in business, because they've rejected me twice this week. But the window for this year closes at the end of the month, so if you want to try them, better hurry.

I sold the first story I ever sent out. It was an atrocious little coliseum piece written in first person (thought I had to, the protag dies in the end) and contracted it out for $100. Mag went under, and the contract didn't have a kill fee.

I feel your pain.

Dude, how many magazines do you want to kill off??(just kidding...you can put down the knife now);).

At least you can take solace from the fact that it keeps getting accepted. Keep plugging away, it'll get out there someday.

Steve, it's longer than that, about 2,000 words. But thanks, and I'll check out the Web site.

Raph has given me an idea though ... Hmm, wonder what would happen if I'd send this darn story off to Redbook or Cosmopolitan?
Heck, this might be a horror short story in itself! "The story that killed a thousand magazines."

LOL, I just had one die under me myself. Db, send that sucker to Us magazine, there never was a more deserving recipient. Redbook is very supportive of fiction, their Summer Fiction Issue has launched the careers of several writers.

Perhaps there's another way to make money with this story. "Send me $50 or I'll sneak it into your submissions pile." You could bring in a tidy sum.

I think it was Charlie Stross who had a magazine go under owing him about $5,000, which was a significant financial blow for him.

Ed, I promise not to send it to you. :-)

I don't think it would fit well with Amazing Journeys.
As for other short stories, I'm forever working on a trilogy of novels. So maybe by 2015 (at the rate I'm going) I'll be able to write and submit short stories again.

Try Aberrant Dreams. They have a pretty good sense of humor. You can also try Andromeda Spaceways Inflight Magazine, or Neo opsis. Semi pros, but the pay is nice and they are fun to work with.
