I actually got a nice rejection from Nick Mamatas. After seeing how he's torn apart other writers, I'm actually glowing at the wording of this.
Nick Mamatas said...
Now, the LAST segment, that was good! There's your story. The frission between the attraction to and repulsion for this robots is the central theme here, and having the naive kid run through it - "faking" coughing (or maybe his mother just says that to us; good unreliable narrator there) after liking Eddy so much was pretty good.
He said my writing was good. With an exclamation point. And he actually got to the end of my story. It's not publication, but I still feel good.

I've kind of poked around at Clarkesworld, and I read two stories. The first a weird tale about a Japanese whale vagina harvester, that spirals into a story about mass producing masks of the harvester. I'm not sure if it was a comment on the alien aspect of Japanese culture from the western viewpoint, or just surreal drivel. Either way, I didn't think it worked. The other story was an anti-heroic piece (not to be confused with anti-hero) tale about a demon-bear that kills everybody and wanders off, thus apparently perpetuating its legend (not sure on this, been awhile, but I remember being disappointed at the almost non-existent ending)...I guess that's what the story was meant to convey, didn't really do much for me. Neither one I considered even good fiction, more like a "Well, I've wasted twenty-five minutes what now?". If stories aren't very entertaining they should have a point or at least a clever twist. I don't mind pointless stories IF they are entertaining. This isn't bitter grapes because I was rejected (I received a semi-positive rejection from Mamatas for Azieran: The Seal of Mon'Ta'Set). There are several venues I've received rejections from that I think published some excellent tales. Granted, I only read two stories I thought might be interesting from Clarkesworld that weren't, and I skipped around on a third where the ending seemed to have discounted the entire story as a fever-dream (did I mention a point to the ending, I think I did!). I don't think anyone should be as scathing as Nick for any reason, especially considering the stories I've read that he accepted. Christopher M. Heath

I am too flippin' busy and far too old to put up with anybody's crap but my own. I like his magazine, but I like other magazines just as well. Tell me the truth, but if your notes in the rejection are for any purpose other than helping me to write a better story, then I simply haven't the time.

I've read much better on Flashing Swords, for instance. World Fantasy Award winner means the winner must have talent, but it doesn't mean every story they write is going to be gold. I remember thinking he turned some nice phrases, but the pacing was a little slow and overall, not that good---certainly nothing that impressed me to the point of thinking, "Now that's a tale that someone should be paying top dollar for!". I certainly didn't think it was original, actually quite the opposite (I called it an anti-heroic tale because there is no hero, just a demonic bear that kills people and makes a pattern out of heads, then wanders off---not much conflict resolution there). That's just my take on one story, I'm sure he's written some great tales. Would you want to read a short story about a serial killer, who wants to kill, say 7 people, then he kills them and wanders off. I guess it's a story, but not much of one. I may be wrong, but it seems like you're saying that since he was a World Fantasy Award winner he wrote a great tale and it was accepted by Clarkesworld. I have a different take on it--I think that because he is a World Fantasy Award winner, that got his mediocre tale into Clarkesworld. I seriously doubt if a no-name submitted this story it would have been accepted, and I'm sure Mamatas would have mentioned everything I have just mentioned, but of course, being 10x more rude about it. I remember seeing something on a Vandermeer web page about being friends with Mamatas, so I wasn't surprised when his story showed up on Clarkesworld, I was surprised at the lack of plot and originality---and I don't remember the characters being all that great, either, they were just brave enough to face the bear and die.

Just wanted to drop in and clarify something. The Watson and Vandermeer stories being used as examples of stories Nick bought for Clarkesworld were actually solicited stories that Sean Wallace, our other editor, purchased.
Easy enough mistake to make. If you want the secret to figuring out who bought what though, the solicited story is always the first one in an issue. Nick's selection is second.
Take care,
-Neil
