I do the same thing in writing. I like to get the feeling and impressions of guns, swords, knives, fabrics, animals, and equipment. Have to hang around Ren fairs and re-enactors camps.
I grew up with Conan illustrations. From Frazetta first, but then scads of others, of course. Despite what the publishers claimed, those great action covers with slashing monsters, fur-clad females, and bloody barbarians certainly did add to the experience of the stories. They also sold a lot of books--at least to me  .
