But who would want a pathetic little creep like Ronnie hanging around their yard? Even as decoration? He's one of the most loathesome, if clever, characters I've written.

He seemed too, or at least he might have.
In my first draft the cops dragged him away gibbering. This was more fun.

I still wanted him to turn into a flamenco and leave the impression that the sweet little old lady had something on her house that turned crooks into flamencos. No wonder she had so many...

Enjoyed your tale very much, Mr. Turner. Like CW, I thought that punk was going to turn into a pink flamingo, but I think he got a fitting comeuppance in the end.

Yes, I just couldn't see the flamingo thing working out. Wouldn't all the crooks have the old lady surrounded then?
I find it funny that everyone blames the sweet old lady who lives in the house for the flamingos. What if she doesn't know a thing about them? How about her lawn ornaments just like her and want to protect her? Afterall, she kind of has a sanctuary going for plastic flamingos.
In other words, what if the birds just do this on their own?
The punk Ronnie is the kind of protag I like for horror and hardboiled crime. He is completely amoral and doesn't even realize it. He doesn't make the connection between his own Grandmother, who gave him the idea for his modus operendai, and Grandmothers in general. He has deliberatly chosen to prey on the weak, elderly poor. He never gives a thought to whether this makes him more loathsome than a guy who holds up convience stores or mugs joggers in the park. And you'll notice that he never considers joining the multitudes of area residents who actually work for a living.

No, all the crooks are the pink plastic flamencos, who are now under some kind of gease to protect her house ;) Poetic justice there. They have to spend eternity not only looking terrible but acting to protect what they were going to damage originally, without any way to save themselves.

That's what I assumed had to be the case once he didn't turn into a lawn ornament, I just thought it would give a dark twist to the story the other way.

The other problem is that, while I saw all sorts of foreshadowing and reason for him to turn into a flamenco, I am completely confused by what did happen to him. Did they eat him? If so, why didn't they shred his clothing? If he turned into fertlizer, why? There's not a hint in the story that would give a valid reason for that. The ending is very unsatisfying to me.

His character was developed fine, he worked well in the story.

Thanks kelly, yes, I kind of muddled up the end a bit. I didn't want to turn him into a flamingo because it would be too obvious. I mentioned somewhere that originally, Officer Dixon and her partner found him huddled in the garden shed, gibbering, and arrested him. That version "wasn't satisfying" either, according to several edit ors who rejected it. So I turned him into fertilizer. Why? because it was piled up in the shed. No other reason.
Consider though, how many flamingos are there? Originally there were dozens around the house but they clearly multiply during the defense. So maybe he's not just fertilizer, maybe he's a "flamingo-in-waiting". I dunno, the flamingos aren't talking.

Lyn,
Thanks! I'm glad you liked the story, thank you so much for posting a review of it on your blog. I do believe thats the first time a story of mine has been blogged about. At least on its own.

You're welcome. I know I won't be able to read every short story that forum members mention in the shameless/brag section, but if I have time I figure I'll try to get to them...since someone took the effort to brag about it :-) And if I've read it, another 5 minutes to comment seems like a fun way to remember what I read! lol
