Do you recall our little discussion on my blog (possibly in 2006) about what I would rate a 10/10 book? I'm not sure if you've seen this review of mine, but here's the closest I've read in the last 3 years: http://www.sfreader.com/read_review.asp?book=1166

Good review - and enthusiastically stated. Hmm, I think I now know what you mean if you say "10" - lol.

I think a 10 for me would definitely have to be 'perfect' - and I'm not sure I have any books in mind at this point. My 8s & 9s are reserved for solid, professional efforts that are engaging and enjoyable in their own right and also come with a high recommendation factor (Enders Game is a quick example). My 6s & 7s are enjoyable and/or intelligent reads, but probably won't be recommended broadly (most of Ender's sequels). My 4s & 5s are 'eh' - not a waste of time, but probably quickly forgotten (can't remember any examples here, lol). If I finish reading my 2s & 3s, it's because it was volunteer effort for a friend or just felt I had to keep going in the face of disaster. And I doubt I'll finish a 1 (0 to 1/2 star).

In order to score a "ten" with me, I have to actually get to the end, flip it back to the first page, saying in effect "That was fun, lets do it again!" I can not think of a fantasy novel I have done that with in at least a decade. If I'm only tempted but don't actually reread the book, its only a nine.
I will say that the lest seven or so Honor Harrington solo novels by David Weber consistently elicited this reponse. That has to be partially a cumulative effect of the series.

I like that definition of a ten, Mike. I can totally appreciate that.

I do recall that discussion, and am intrigued to click over and see which book it was.

I'm back. Steven Erikson, eh? The name rings a bell--I may have seen posters for the book at the Tor party I got pleasantly intoxicated at during last year's World Fantasy Con.

Even I know I sound like an annoying, broken record player, but I cannot extoll the praises of Steven Erikson enough. I simply thoroughly enjoy reading everything the man writes. And if I cannot get y'all to read The Malazan Book of the Fallen (which I realize at ten, 800+ page books is not everyone's cup o' tea) everyone really should read the 100-page novella trilogy he's written betwixt the big books. Set in the same world and even with overlapping characters, these books have brought me to tearfilled laughing bouts several times - and I do not read comic fantasy. These aren't spoofs, not slapstick, not laugh-track comedic - these are situational, observational humor, droll humor, that anyone can appreciate as anyone could experience events to generate such thoughts or hear such words themselves. Well, perhaps not the fantastical, speculative parts of the tales, but you get my point!

Anyhoo, thanks for pressing me on that subject back then, Nicholas, and for humoring me now. And thanks, Michael, for your incisivie inclusion of fact in this thread!
