Michael,

I don't know how I missed this, but I see that Servant of the Manthycore has a foreword by Michael Moorcock.

Michael Moorcock! freaked

Dude, I don't know how you scored that one, but kudos to ya!

Thanks, I am pretty stoked about it, especially since he says some pretty amazing things about it.
A mutual acquaintance mentioned me to him, and he liked my stuff. When I asked him for a blurb, he offered an entire foreword.
Very nice guy, BTW. I have had a couple of great middle-of-the-night email chats with him.

I agree. Nice to have Michael Moorcock backing you up. I'm reading his study of epic fantasy right now, "Wizardry and Wild Romance," and I don't get a real positive vibe from him so far as to the current state of affairs of fantasy. But, being that he's so picky (or critical, as it were), you should feel even better about his endorsement.

And maybe he, too, sees the need for somewhat of a revolution in the fantasy genre, as you're discussing in another thread.

He certainly hints at that in the foreword he wrote to my book:

Michael Moorcock said...

...This is a narrative concerning the fantastic unlike most books published today as fantasy fiction.  It resonates with the authenticity of genuine myth, bringing a deep, true sense of the past; a conviction which does not borrow from genre but mines our profoundest dreams and memories; the kind which give birth to myths.   As Ehart’s protagonist, the beautifully realized warrior woman sometimes known as Ninshi, tells us “Songs all end up right.  Life does not.” Yet, as she demonstrates, it is part of the human condition that we are forever striving to make things end up like the songs.

This novel demonstrates the difference between a good folk tale, a genre story and an enduring myth.  The genre story usually dodges the facts of genuine tragedy while the myth, or the story which retains the quality of myth, does not...

So you can see why my head is so big lately :) And that doesn't include the hardcore praise!

It seems to me he is saying kind of the same thing, that he is looking for a breakthrough.

If he had written that about something I had written, I'd be glowing, too. But I don't need Moorcock's stamp of approval to know I'm going to like the book.

I'm posting a link to the future of fantasy discussion thread on my blog to try to drive in more people to participate in the conversation. I can pretty much guarantee it won't, since I have only about a baker's dozen worth of subscribers, but you never know what brilliant minds lurking on the Internet may stumble upon the post and wander here.

Thanks, Nik.

You never know who is going to stumble onto your blog. I have a HIPAA compliance and IT security blog (certainly a subject of limited interest) and former US Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist links to it. No idea how he found it, but evidently he liked it :)

You truely never know who's going to go looking for you. I went in for a job interview. I work with computers and the interview had nothing to do with writing OR art. Yet the guy that was interviewing me had gone to google after he read my resume and went searching. Somehow, he linked my real name with my pen name and knew all about crystalwizard, my art and everything else. I was impressed. I didn't get the job (but that had nothing to do with him or me, the management upstairs wanted someone else).

You know, for all my yakking about it, it has been brought to my attention that many might not have read the book but would be interested in seeing what Mr. Moorcock said about it.
So I posted it here, on my blog:  http://mehart.blogspot.com

Heh. I am the fly that he decided to have mercy on, and remove from the spider's web. "Help me! Help me!" I squeeked in my little fly voice.
From what he says, he is very busy.
I do know some name folks who may be very amenable, though. I'll PM you.

Oh, I would've deserved it, especially if I'd expressed the hope that the things keeping him busy didn't involve doing more singing...

I keed, I keed! scool   I have a feeling a Moorcockian lambasting would be a verbal tour de force; although I've heard rumours the man can be a bit prickly, you know he'd only open a can of erudite whup-ass when it was warranted, unlike Harlan Ellison, whose ire can apparently be provoked by merely passing into his field of view.

Even if Moorcock's endeavours began and ended at Elric, he'd still be one of the legends of the field.

I only wish to know by far-away rumor--- if Moorcock doesn't actually own the English language outright, he most likely has right of first refusal and a healthy stock option.
Ellison doesn't require even ire, or passing into his field of vision. He just needs an audience, of any size, in order to rant.

In all seriousness, big major Kudos to you!

I'll have a couple big announcements on the way, depending on whether or not things land through the way it so far looks. Who knows? Maybe we'll be doing book signings at a table together in a couple of years. burger

But, man, a foreward by Michael Moorcock! Awesome!

Scott, I would love to do a signing with you someday. I am quite content to bask in your reflected glory :) I was next to Harry Turtledove at the B&N signing at RadCon this weekend--- suffice to say that his line was much longer than mine :)
I just hope a little of that Turtledove magic rubbed off.

Exactly. Although "cool" is of course subjective. On Hawkwind's Friends and Relations album, Moorcock fronts a band called The Deep Fixx (the name he gave Jerry Cornelius's band). I think he'll be better remember for the lyrics he wrote for Hawkwind and for Blue Oyster Cult.
