Is Black Gate available at newsstands? I guess maybe that's a bit old-fashioned, since around here "newsstands" offer a lot of stuff that ain't quite uhhhh....Newsweek, ya know.

But if I went to Barnes & Noble or some other bookstore with a magazine section, would I find Black Gate? Or is that something where I'd just have to check an individual store? I'm just curious as to good venues where I could get BG as an impulse buy.

I've seen it in Borders and Barnes and Noble. That was a couple years ago. Not sure about the current status. Both places make it hard to find any fiction magazines at all, though.

Hi Dave,

BLACK GATE is carried by two major distributors, Ingram and Source Interlink, who carry it to Borders, Barnes & Noble, Waldenbooks, and a few smaller outlets.

Sadly, that doesn't mean it's widely available.  Most of the B&N shops here in Chicago, for example, don't carry it.

From what I've been able to make out, both Borders & B&N use a pretty decent computer projection system for their magazine distribution.  Basically, BLACK GATE has been slotted as "equivalent" to some other magazine.. say, REALMS OF FANTASY, F&SF, or perhaps DRAGON.  BG is sent only to those stores where this equiavlent mag sells well.  So our initial distribution, in large part, was wholly dependent on whatever magazine the chain buyers thought we were equivalent to.

After about a year (or 12 issues), the computer system has enough data to decide where to put you all on its own.  Unfortuanately, BG has not yet published 12 issues.  So we're in something of a limbo.

Will things get better after we publish 12?  Not sure.  I do know out sell through in those few stores we are carried has been pretty good (hovering around 50%), which is higher than most.  So that bodes well.  But we really need a regular schedule for at least 6 issues to make a real dent in the national chains.

So that's our goal.  I don't realy expect to make headway in improving our bookstore distribution until then.

Cheers,

- John

OK, thanks for the info.

I think subscriptions are better, but I also like to be able to recommend it to other fans and let 'em know where they can check it out on an impulse.

Thanks,
Dave

Concerning the "regular schedule" mentioned above. Is Black Gate planning on trying for a quarterly schedule, or biannual?

Our goal is to get back to a quarterly schedule.  Step one was closing to submissions and clearing away our submissions backlog, which is now essentially done.  Step two is to increase ad revenue, so we're making money with each issue, and we're making headway on that.

Issue 12 will be out in late February; and 13 in early summer.  Assuming our revenues hold up, we hope to do 4 issues in 2008.

I make a point of posting a link to the BG website at various gaming and fantasy/sci-fi forums to help people become aware of the magazine.  I figure if we can generate interest that way, it will go a long way to getting people to ask for it at their local shops, or we can ultimately bypass the shops and BG gets a nicer margin.
