Okay. I got overwhelmed, I admit it. What with Strange Worlds of Lunacy and all. But I'm back, sort of! At least I updated the front page and there's a new story (part 1 of "Crystal Clear") up at ResAliens, April 2008 issue. Plus, do you like the graphics I added? Nice touch, I think. :-)

Now for a request. Is there anyone who would be interested in working with me on the zine? I'm looking for someone with an interest in spiritual fantasy and sci-fi (you don't have to be on the exact same page as me, no one is, I imagine, lol). I was seriously considering putting the zine on hiatus and still may, but maybe what I'm really hoping for is a partner in cri...er, cr..eating a professional zine that can eventually become a semi to pro market. PM or email me if you have some thoughts or questions. Thanks!

(cross-posted in my zine thread down the board a ways)

Sorry if I'm uneducated. Home many hours per week are we talking about? I've never been associated with any publication, so I'm totaly ignorant.

Thanks Michael, and good suggestion CW, but I think I'd rather keep my 'general call' for help among people I'm familiar with (you all! :-) ) And Jim, good question. Since this has been a hobby for me (a grand experiment, but with the goal of hosting a quality zine) I don't know how many hours it really takes to run a professional pub. I don't have a bunch of slush, but I can handle that, for the most part...

I think what/who I may be looking for is someone to take on the web design and publishing of the zine. And sure, help me pick stories and provide feedback to the authors (ie, read slush) but I can edit and be in contact with the authors and advertise and all that... So, what? couple hours a week to upload stories, archive, change ToC, etc? Am I being realistic?

What kind of system do you use for TOC and all that? do you change everything manualy or do you have a system set up? I guess what I'm asking is how much compouter knowledge is needed and how much is done directly through blogger?

Blogger is all by hand - and since I think my next move is to get a dedicated url (which I'll have to pay for) and find a webhost and webdesigner (which also costs money) - what I think I'll do for now is put the zine on "low burner" (read, year long hiatus), and concentrate on 'real life' at this point, and start the zine back up as a side-business eventually and not just a hobby. That way I can pay authors, sell anthos, compete on P&E polls, etc. So thanks for asking, and it's been a great nearly year long experiment where I've learned a lot but am going to tread water for awhile. :-) Will stay in touch on the boards every now and then, though.

Now that SWoL is done - and ready for marketing, promotion, etc...yes, I'll still be working with CW on all that. Not sure I want to take on another antho project very soon, though. Whew! And to think CW was working on two at the same time! yikes. So...possibly, depends on what she proposes next! lol :-)

2 anthos!?!?!! You marvel at that? CW has been working on 2 anthos, 3 regular zine issues, 1 special issue, plus writing, rewriting, editing her own stuff!!!!

I can't even write my own stuff (much) while I'm doing my little share of the work.

Lyn - while I totally understand a hiatus, I am saddened to see it occur - I wish you mucho satisfaction in whatever you do - and if you do come back this way, a speedy return!

you forget that CW is also working on Danny's book (30% done), Slawomir's book (99% done, BWPress.. I'm just editor/typesetter/cover artist), John's book (major editing yet to do. 10% done), Bob's book (25% done, just asked for a revision), several other books in discussion stage, as well as fielding requests for art from several people AND trying to hold down a 40 hour a week computer support job that pays for all of this.

CW's pretty busy. Puts me to shame...

But I understand where you're coming from Lyn. Editing, even in the "for the love" world is no walk in the park!

This is part of why I consolidated the yearly anthology and the webzine aspects of Southern Fried Weirdness Press. Updating the website weekly and sorting through additional slush for a seperate anthology seemed like too much in addition to balancing my own fledgling writing career. Life's gotten kind of crazy since our 2nd boy was born back in September. For a while, I was starting to feel like I couldn't give my writers the attention or publicity they deserved -- I was just treading water instead of swimming forward.

This consolidation should have benefits: it allows me to be a more selective and pay writers more at the same time. I'm also hoping to incorporate some new features (poetry, nonficiton, etc) which excite me as an editor/writer (writer because I plan on writing non-ficiton features on True Life Southern Fried Weirdness -- I'm attempting to go on some ghost hunts or meet with an organization that studies the habits of the "Southern Bigfoot" -- no joking, it's apparently a different species than the one on the West Coast; who'd 'a thunk it? -- for a story for the first issue). Maybe while you wait for assistance you could tinker with a diffent format? Add some of your own non-fiction articles about how your spirituality and sci-fi go together? Maybe go bi-monthly or quarterly?

Most of all try to keep it fun and exciting for yourself! That's the key, I think. It seems somtimes there's very little reward in this micro-press world.

Hang in there...

PS -- I like the artwork and format this month on the site. Very nice!

Thanks, guys. :-) I don't know about the traffic - still under 50 unique hits a day, but heh, when I pay, they'll play...or something like that, lol. But for subs, it's enough to fill an issue, so I'm happy.

And yeah, ME, I liked what I saw at 1000 faces. I figure if I can get my name out there as well in other contexts (reviews, by-lines, etc) then you never know.

Well, 50 uniques a day ain't bad for a mag with static content (since it's likely those 50 are different people every time, not recurring users).
