Oregon has some spectacular things to see only minutes from Portland. A trip down the Columbia Gorge on the scenic highway at sunrise is never to be forgotten. That same trip could involve a zip across the river at Biggs, into Washington and a visit to the Sam Hill replica of Stonehenge, high on a cliff overlooking the Columbia. Five miles away, in the same middle of nowhere is a world-class art museum, Maryhill, with the largest collection of Rodin in the world. Stop by the Charburger at Cascade Locks for lunch --- Oregon's best and sloppiest burger for over 30 years. Great Wild West atmosphere. Got a few bucks? The Columbia Gorge Hotel was a favorite hang-out for Rudolph Valentino, with beautiful surrounding grounds and a bridge over the waterfall that tumbles to the bottom of the gorge far below. The gorge also has some of the best windsailing in the world, and on a sunny weekend there are stretches with hundreds of brightly colored sails dotting the river, darting back and forth in a frenetic ballet.
That's just in one direction, and a couple of hours drive.
