I noticed that the old Flashing Swords novels edited by Lin Carter has a wikipedia entry...but I couldn't find a wikipedia entry for Flashing Swords magazine?
Anyone who types sword and sorcery into wikipedia will be directed to ALL  magazines and webzines and websites that have links to S&S.
Just saying you might think about creating a page for FS at wikipedia. yeah

I had added us to the Sword and Sorcery page but I like the idea of a Flashing Swords Press page that talks about the magazine and the books.

Kevin, I don't suppose you've got time on your hand and would be willing to set that page up by chance?

Thanks - I tried to include links but Wiki rejected my first edit. So no links. If someone else understands their rules and how-to's better, please feel free to link it all up.

Ok..I Lin and I looked at the FS wiki page and read the entry.
We saw that authors included in FS had been mentioned but that there does not appear to be a credit saying something like...each issue also contains illustrations by various new artists.
Might be good to add that.
(We're still struggling thru the wiki guidelines. LOL)

Pictures can be included, suggest posting up a pic of maybe the first issue cover you guys printed?

You could mention what date issue #1 was first released and then include how many issues have been published since and what issue number you're up to now.

Lin and I can't do this because we're not familiar enough with the subject.

You could post up links to any one (like a blog site or other webzine/magazine/punlisher) that has featured a favourable review of FS.

The picture could be a clickable thumbnail or a downsized clickable pic.

If there's one thing I hate on wiki's general sword and sorcery info page it's how they (or a particular writer?) class S&S as 'low fantasy' how freaking insulting is that?
They claim there is Low F. High F and Epic F.
What a load of bollocks.

Is there low fiction. High fiction and Epic fiction? And is not the definition of each one a matter of personel taste?
Like are Bernard Cornwall's novels low, high or epic?

Is Andy McNab low and Wilbur Smith high? Who comes up with this rubbish?

Anyway...I'll have another read of the wiki rules at work tonight when I have more time.
Lin and I are just off for a mountain bike ride then brekkie. (breakfast.)

Cheerio: Jaq and Lin.

Low Fantasy is not an insult--- it refers to little or no magic and a more personal goal set--- rather than High Fantasy's abundant magic and save the world story arcs, Low Fantasy is generally more gritty and concerned with more managable issues--- save the village, find the treasure, steal the amulet, hold the bridge.
High fantasy heroes often are royal or high-born, or alternately the fulfillment of a prophesy. Low fantasy heroes are many times just trying to make their way in the world.

Here's the link to the freshly updated wiki for "Flashing Swords ezine" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flashing_Swords_ezine#External_links

I have to wait 4 days before I can change the name, but I will be changing it to "Flashing Swords (magazine)"

I've updated and added links to both external and internal sites. We aren't supposed to link to sites that are purely marketing or selling something so I removed the link to the anthology's purchase page. Once the Flashing Swords Press website is functional I will link the anthology to the anthology's page at FSP and add the FSP link. Maybe then I will include a link to my bio, but I'd really rather not at this time (and definitely not until then).

I could not find the 'artists bit' you mentioned Jaqhama. And I'm not dealing with a picture right now, maybe later.

And the descriptor low fantasy brings with it no more "negative" connotations than sword & sorcery already does. In fact, there are many people who proudly prefer to read low fantasy to high, and would take inverse umbrage at any allusions to its inferiority.

General public license and you can't do anything about it. I'd have to add it to the FS website and make all the pictures and content available to the public with it, which I'm NOT going to do.

If I mailed you the picture, and you put it up under gpl, then I'd violate my contract with the artist. No.

" In addition, it regularly features articles and interviews related to these genres. Each issue also contains a number of illustrations by various artists"

And I repeat in regards to the low fantasy expression...

In normal fiction novels is there such a thing as low fiction and high fiction?

I don't think so.

It's a personel dislike is all.
I'm guessing the low fantasy expression wasn't invented by a writer. More likley by a reviewer or editor.

I still think a picture would make a big diff to the webpage.
If artist rights are a problem why not just make up your own one off magazine cover picture and post it up?

Cheers: Jaq.

Actually . . . literary fiction vs. genre fiction . . . pulp . . .
I don't think so.
It's a personel dislike is all. I have to agree that on the surface it appears somewhat elitist.
I'm guessing the low fantasy expression wasn't invented by a writer. More likley by a reviewer or editor. Do you have a better suggestion? [serious question, not meaning to be snide in any way] How do you differentiate the more mundane fantasy from High Fantasy? Mundane Fantasy would seem a bit weak. Bluecollar? Peasant? How about Earth-bound? Grounded? [in the zen sense] Interesting subject - for a word/label geek like me, anyhow ;-)
I still think a picture would make a big diff to the webpage.
If artist rights are a problem why not just make up your own one off magazine cover picture and post it up? I think it's a matter of respecting copyright more than any kind of 'problem' per se. I look forward to what you come up with, agreeing as I do that pictures make a big difference.

I wish you wouldn't put you responses in blue under what you are quoting and put both of them in the same quote box. I have a real hard time reading it like that.

How you get link-ins on the Wiki entry:

The wiki folks are ... I won't say the word, it's not nice. It's almost impossible to create an entry these days and not have it flagged almost immediately by one of them for speedy deletion. You almost have to write a thesis in order to get them to leave it alone. So I can't suggest you create a wiki page about whatever it is you want to link it, and then link to it unless you want to spend a week writing it first.

However, to do a normal link, just login to your wiki account (create one if you don't have one) then go to the flashingswords page, edit this page (tabs at the top) and add text to the entry. when you get to where you want to add a link just type out the url. Try to make it look like it's connected to the text. Like this:

blah blah blah blah, http://url.url.url

or like this

blah blah blah blah at http://url.url.url

then save the changes

I put in a link to the page from the Sword and Sorcery page. Links to articles are much beloved by Wiki Admins, I believe, as they make it feel less orphaned and more real.

Thanks Brian.

I tried to create a bio entry for someone on the magazine staff (not me) the other night and link it to the page to a: get rid of the orphaned complaint and b: because well it would be nice if there were entries for the important members of staff that were linked to from the page but someone on the Wiki staff deleted the bio entry within 10 minutes. It wasn't, I guess, either long enough or they felt that the individual wasn't important.

For a service that says it's supposed to be a collection of knowledge, they sure are restrictive about what knowledge they feel is worth collecting.
