It's time to show Flashing Swords some love.

Go to the Preditors & Editors Poll and vote for your favourite Fiction Magazine/E-Zine, your favourite Magazine/e-zine Editor and perhaps your favourite SF&F Short Story. Check out the other categories while you're at it. And maybe next year we'll find a listing for a certain anthology. :-)

How's this for weird ... I have a couple of stories listed in the P&E poll, one in horror short stories and one in "other" short stories, but nothing in fantasy -- which is the stuff I usually publish the most and get the most email/feedback/appreciation for, etc.

It's a funny world.

A threepeat would be nice, but I only had a few stories appear last year, and nothing on line, that I can remember. Good luck with your nominations.

Mike Turner's story The Jewel Below is nominated too.

Nik, 2008 is definitely looking busier than last year.

My face always looks like this.

Looks like I have a reason to vote in this poll now. By the way, do we ever get to vote for our favorite preditor?

Um...I have what'll probably be a really dumb question:  What IS the Preditors and Editors poll, and why is it important?

I see the word "poll" and all sorts of negative, cynical ideas spring to mind.  It's not JUST a popularity contest, is it?

Don't worry, I still voted for FS.  Twice.  What kind of self-proclaimed token fan would I be if I didn't?

Answer to the question:

Go visit the links provided above, look around the site, and you'll see what the poll is.

Predators and Editors is a very important site, one which you should visit when deciding to submit stuff to someone you don't know. It will keep you from getting scammed.

you can't stuff the ballot box like that, Tim. That'll get your votes all tossed out. Plus, I really don't appreciate it when someone decides to be dishonest in my behalf.

Oh calm down.  It wasn't like that.  I wasn't paying attention and clicked the same link twice and voted and then was like, "wait a minute, wasn't that the same page?"  Sure enough, it was.  I'm sure they'll weed out the duplicates.

Back to my first post:  I didn't realize P&E was more than just a poll.  That's cool.  I still don't see why the poll is important.  That's what the thread was about, and what I was asking about.

A newbie's take on it: It's a Readers' Choice Poll for small press publications. So, yes, it is a popularity contest in a sense. But the votes are primarily cast by those who read small press material, not those who only consume what the big publishing companies put on the shelves. So, naturally, the group casting the votes has better-than-average taste and judgment of quality.=) This makes it better than a mere popularity contest, and thus, important.

But that's just a newbie's take. Some of the veterans in here will probably explain it better.

There is nothing unimportant about a popularity contest!
Few enough people read short fiction of any kind, heck read fiction of any kind. P&E gets a good chunk of them to come out and let us know who's done good!

Yeah, Mike. I thought that "The Jewel Below," probably more than any other tale I've read this year, could be inserted into a 1930s issue of Weird Tales and no one would know the difference. Good stuff.
