I've still got a story ready that was, by the editor's message to me, about to be accepted right before Flashing Swords stopped publishing I'd love to resubmit.

It's Nov. 1, subs are open.

I do NOT see anything about sending you MORE than one story at a time.

You're welcome to send in multiple-submissions, Tim. But as you pointed it, it might be more advantageous if you only sent in one story per issue.
Dungeoneer said...

Now, for the sake of argument, lets say an author has 2 stories that have been written, edited, re-written, re-edited, proof-read, spit-n-polished, spell-checked, and edited again. Both these stories are (for the sake of this argument) as good as they are going to get. Now let's say that story A is just a BETTER story than story B. Now if that author sends them both to the same magazine during two different submission windows, then they may both be accepted by the mag, but for two seperate issues. BUT if he sends them both at the same time, then story A would beat out story B. Which is great, because the author's getting published. But it's bad, because many mags do NOT want you to re-submit a story that they already rejected once, unless they tell ya to do it.

Rejected is NOT the same as 'please revise and resubmit

There will be 'Best of FS' anthologies - eventually.  Soon there will be this anthology:

A brand spanking new antho - and the beginning of an annual event.

...Oh.  I must've misunderstood something, then.  I thought the anthologies were like a 'best of' sort of thing.  Aargh!  Something else to keep watching for!

There is, of course, the additional option (dilemma?) of having a submitted story considered for a Flashing Swords Anthology.  While there will be submission periods specifically designated for annual anthologies, there is nothing prohibiting me from snatching quality work from the regular magazine submissions.

"Thirdy"--I can dig it.  I read the other thread, I know where it came from.  :)

Yeah, some mags do that, too, from what I hear.  Again, I don't know if CW works that way (probably does).  BUT as a complete unknown with NO credits under my name, I dunno just how daring I should be.

...And, uh, I dunno if my 2 stories are as spit-n-polished as they can possibly get or not.  ...I was just in an argumentative mood.  :)  blush   (<--see?  ashamed of myself and everything)

I would, of course, like to think that they are.

Hey, if "Thirdy" works for me, I'm all over it :)

Tim, I don't know how Kelly works, but if your two stories are better than anything else I'd received, I certainly wouldn't reject the second one. I'd hold it over for the next publication period (in fact, we do this all the time at EDF. We have authors who've submitted enough gold that we're going to be publishing them in February).

"Thirdy" Lapp (heehee)---Apparently there are authors out there who believe that if ya send enough stories to a mag, something is BOUND to get accepted. Whereas I only have 2 stories I wanna send, and I've NEVER seen 2 stories in 1 ish by the same guy (unless someone's using a pen name). Both of my stories were written with FS in mind, and I think I've figured out which one to send first. I guess I'll just try and wait till the next window for the other one.

CW--K, we kinda went through this...oh, about a month ago.  Maybe two.  You said "Look at the guidelines" I said "I did, it ain't there."  But I checked again, just in case, both here in the forums AND on the zine site.  I see originals, I see reprints, and I see stuff send to you and somewhere else SIMULTANEOUSLY.  I do NOT see anything about sending you MORE than one story at a time.
So I asked ya about it, you said it was cool to send as many as ya want, so long as you don't mind them being tied up for the duration of the reading period.  I can dig it.

That, at least, is the gist of the 'advice' I was referring to.  I did not see that on your guidelines, but I HAVE seen in on more than one mag's guidelines page.  Hence my dilemma.  Besides, it gives me something to worry about.  :)

And, sorry, but no I probably will stick to the e-version.  I print my own so I can read it when I should be going to sleep.  :)

It's been suggested that if ya send 1 story to a mag for this issue, then send the next one for the enxt issue, they might both get in.  BUT if ya send 'em both in the same sub window, the stronger peice overshadows the weaker one, the stronger one gets in, and the mag doesn't want the weaker one re-submitted.

Wow. I never thought of that. I'm usually pleased as punch if even one of my pieces gets in. The thought of two pieces being accepted never crossed my mind.

Read the FS writer's guidelines to see what our policy on multiple submissions is.

That's a definite possibility. Here's a hint:

Make sure what you are subbing is as polished and professional as you can make it BEFORE you send it in, not after you've had it rejected by several magazines first. That usually means sending it through crit groups and doing a lot of 'killing your babies'

Oh! And I was gonna be nice and wait one day before I sent it. I wanna read the new ish first! (I wanna know what happens to Dermanassian next!)

Patience ;) You gonna buy a print copy or just stick with the e-version?

Well, originally Mike mentioned that he was planning on having the antho ready for Mile Hi Con. Obviously that date has come and gone and I've queried Mike about the sub with no response, so I guess I meant "if the antho is cancelled" rather than "if it is rejected".

You realize that Mike is one of the Flashing Swords editors? If he passes on it for his antho, is there a reason you think he'll accept it for FS?

I have something that Mike Turner's been considering for his proposed antho that might work well for flashing swords, but I don't want to do anything with it until he gets back to me on it. If he passed or the antho falls through I'll send it your way. I don't usually write s&s but this one piece ended up pulling together quite well, IMHO.
