Was Flashing Swords the market you were talking about in your Slipstream post? You should know that Pitch Black and Flashing Swords are defunct, as in no longer publishing. FS might come back one day, but right now it doesn't exist as a market.

Fantasy Flash fiction is tricky as 95% of the places out there that accept flash (or, lets say, encourage flash rather than simply look at it from time to time) want lit fic and experimental style stories which, truth be told, the form is perfect for. I think such a thing as high fantasy and sword and sorcery style flash could really take off if enough markets wanted it, but I feel a relaxation on the 1k ceiling really goes a long way with narratives of this kind. It's twice as hard to write a decent straight narrative in under 1k than something like 1.2 or 1.3, at least in my experience.

Anyway, the qualities of flash fiction are concision, obviously, and also balance. Not only does every word have to count, but all the story elements have to maintain a good proportion in a very small space, which is hard to do. Another hallmark of flash is knowing exactly what to include and where to begin the story, you have much less latitude for accessory information. Its very easy to screw this up, as I've found out more often than I'd like to admit.

I think a bad habit of flash might be front loading a piece so that too much of a story's weight occurs at the front (which is probably written in the author's natural pace for a somewhat longer work) so that the end is thinned out and rushed.

I had thought SwordandSorcery.org was accepting articles and fiction but I think I am mistaken.

I heard that Blackgate Magazine was going to start accepting " short fiction " 1000-2000 words but that might have changed.

Is there any examples of flash fiction in past issues of Flashing Swords?

No, they only announced they'd start accepting it right before they closed.

There are plenty of places on the web that have it, check ralan.com for markets or google flash fiction and your bound to find some. I doubt you'll see any sword and sorcery or high fantasy types though.

There are a couple of markets that will look at the kind of flash FS would have accepted: All Possible Worlds, Staffs and Starships, Blood, Blade, and Thruster are three that occur to me. I'd be interested to see if Black Gate will start taking short stuff as well.

Check out my Rainbow Man stories at Fables.com. This was an attempt to write "Fantasy" Flash fiction. I wrote over 50 of them and they appeared at fables, in Nemonymous and elsewhere.

Interesting works, GW. Quick fantasy reads tinged with a self-deprecating humor. I liked the dragons best.

I thought I was so clever when I wrote the first of these. I said to myself, "You've invented something new!" Then a much wiser person pointed out to me "They're called 'Fables'." I was disappointed but it did direct me to where I should publish them.

"Nekronomikon" was my fave.  I'll be thinking about that one for a while....

All were excellent reads, IMHO.

Very nice work, G.W. ;-)

Flash fiction has to basically throw you into a scenario without any prior introduction of/to it and hold your attention.

Yes, being too descriptive; bad grammar and punctuation (unless it's a feature!)

Hello, Han. I went over the guidelines, but there was no mention of payment. I'm sure writers would like to know if LF is a paying market or a non-paying one.

Cheers,
Thirdy

Going back to the original post, Mike Arnzen writes pretty good flash fiction.

Some sites that are devoted to flash fiction are:
Shadowed Realms
MicroHorror

If you're interested, there's an e-anthlogy called Shadow Box. It contains TONS of flash fiction (including one by yours truly) and a whole lot more. You can order a copy/download from Shocklines for only $3.00.

Hope I've been helpful.

Hello again.

There is no fee charged to read or download. We do have a section for donations, but as yet we have received none. But the main aim is to distribute the material so that's ok really.
