A quick update:

There has been some question as to whether Playtesting will continue now that WOC released rule set 4.0. The answer....

Yes!

The reason.....

There's a lot of materials that are unique to the world of the Imperium that we still want to see what people think. Do they enjoy playing with the races provided? How did they like the magic system? Were some things better than other?

The world of the Imperium Saga is so rich with creatures, history, and culture that we can basically mold the game however we want. Seeing what testers think of the things we were introducing will be invaluable.

And for those interested in 4.0, starting August 1st the Development Team will begin the task of converting our 3.5 game into 4.0. There's a lot of changes to come (outlook, what will be included, etc), but we feel that the 4.0 game will more closely mirror the rules but still have a solid flair of my world. I'm sure at some point we'll be looking for 4.0 playtesters too!

You should probably touch base with Robb (I believe I included his email with the packet). He's going to be coordinating feedback from the teams to then link similar concerns and bring it to the rest of the Development Team for review.

Depending on the frequency of your gameplay, either a weekly, bi-weekly, or even a monthly email with the progress reports and notes would probably be fine.

Enjoy the game! I'm quite pleased with the way that 1.1 turned out, especially with the tweaks to the Mages, which makes it closer in line with what is in my novels. Hopefully you'll agree (your wife too since she took the Combat Mage first time around!).

Clifford, I got my 1.1 manuals in the mail today. We'll have a lot of time to play over the holiday break (the academic life--a whole month off in the middle of winter); are you shooting for any deadline to collect feedback and responses?

Hello All,

The Imperium Saga d20 RPG Testing Manual Release 1.1 is now ready for release. For those of you who had been playtesting 1.0, 1.1 fixes quite a bit of the issues that were embedded in the Playable Races and Classes (as well as tweaking the racial weapons and standardizing quite a bit, and numerous other tweaks here or there).

The Mage classes have been completely redesigned, and you'll see a new class added into the mix as well (and some playable races that came out and some that went in).

Everyone who has been testing 1.0 and providing feedback will either receive 1.1 or "patches" that fix 1.0 and brings it up to 1.1. If anyone else is interested in being considered for playtesting, feel free to post here or send me a private message.

I'm really excited about the fixes and can't wait to see what kind of feedback we get from the playtesters.

Thanks to all who have been involved thus far, and I hope you continue to enjoy the Imperium Saga universe!

Cliff

Slowly but surely. The very first patch (1.0) was released yesterday when I realized that some weapons were on the Tables but not described. So that has been fixed and sent out to testers.

It seems like the packages I shipped out haven't been received by everyone yet (the joys of Media Mail), but once the testers have everything things should pick up fairly quickly.

I did get a bombshell about a week ago. WOC revised their open license agreement and now we can't include Character Creation in the book. One of my stances all along is that people should be able to pick this book up and play (that way, a traditional gamer has a new setting, but an Imperum Saga only fan doesn't have to then go and buy a bunch of D&D books to figure out how to play).

I can understand their stance: if people are making the games easy to play without having to buy the D&D books, then WOC is losing out on money (whereas the point of the license is to get more people playing and expanding the options out there...all with their core books required to play the game).

I'm not too happy about it (just because of my fans), but we roll with the punches. Character Creation is still in the booklets for testing, but obviously those sections will be edited out by the Development Team before it goes to final press.

Hi Anna,

A group of 7 to 8 sounds great (back to the printers I go!). Send me an email at Braksis@CliffordBBowyer.com and I'll email you the Participation Agreement.

Thanks for the interest!

Testing packets are printed and ready to go. For those of you who returned your Participation Agreements, the test kits and materials will be going into the mail in the morning (Saturday). Let me know when you get everything and whether you have any questions!

Good luck and have fun!

My IRC group would jump at it (we all do d20), but sharing materials there would be problematic at best, since we're all over the USA.

Corvus, I didn't ask this before, but if you have a group that would be interested, all participants sign a Confidentiality Clause. I have no problem sending materials to numerous locations and having you run it as the Testing Supervisor (DM) online.

Let me know.

Hi Armand, I have the Master Proof printed (everything but the "Monsters" chapter ~ there is a stat guy who has been working on crunching the numbers to make sure everything was balanced prior to sending it out to everyone, but I haven't heard from him in three weeks and he's not responding to requests for status updates....so, if he doesn't answer my last attempt ~ sent this morning ~ by tomorrow morning, I'll bring the proof down to have the actual testing kits copied and bound and have them in the mail before the end of the week).

The last thing I want is for the number cruncher to cause a delay that will curb some of the enthusiasm of the testing teams! Besides, part of the testing will be coming back and giving feedback on whether something is balanced or not (so everything doesn't need to be 100% perfect right now!).

I'll drop you a quick note to let you know when I actually have mailed the booklets and materials.

Mike: The "research" phase should hopefully be long since done (that took place about 3 years ago!). Everything is written, developed, and just waiting for the final stat check before officially kicking off testing (as I said above, it's probably foolish of me to wait. Testing will wind up causing things to change, but I've always been a bit of a perfectionist, so if something is known to be wrong, I'd like to tweak it and fix it before sending it out for testing!).

No more delays! The booklets will be going out this week!

Okay, let me run it past my tabletop group tomorrow (Sunday) evening and I'll see if I can't drum up some interest.
How'd it go?

Unfortunately I just got a bunch of blank stares, which is their way of saying "no". Ah well. I tried. eyes I'll ask again next weekend, but I don't know if it'll do much good.

Genre is Fantasy. Familiarity with the novels are not required. After all, if you can't pick up the game and play it without knowing about the books, then the Development Team failed in their job of creating it! It should be playable for Imperium Saga fans as well as gamers in general.

I may be interested in playtesting and have a couple of possible others who would be willing to join in, but you neglected to mention the most basic information: what genre? Also, is familiarity with the novels a prerequisite?

I would be very interested in testing your game, as well as fellow SFReaderite Frank - we put together an occasional D&D game with my 11 year old son as well as a couple of other people. We could get a group of 4-6 people together for this and help you out.

For the past few years, a development team has been working on transforming the world I created in my novels and turning it into a d20 RPG game. After working through a few last minute tweaks, the book has now been finalized and is ready to resume testing.

Through various connections and events, we do already have individuals who are interested in testing. However, as I scroll through the feedback and comments posted on many games, I see again and again that people criticize the lack of playtesting. As such, I'd like to open it up and welcome people who might be interested in doing some playtesting for the game.

Materials for testers (such as game booklets, feedback forms, etc) will be prepared based on the total number of testers that we have (number of groups and the number of people within each group). All testers will need to sign a Confidentiality / Participation Clause, and their names should also be provided for inclusion in the final release under playtesting (the publishing credit will be provided, but there will be no financial compensation for volunteering for playtesting).

When we originally began considering playtesting (about 6 months ago), we created a very formalized and structured test. We have since decided to abandon that and give the actual materials to people to review, use, and play as if buying it in a store for a more accurate test. This should give testers some considerable flexibility with how they desire to run and play the test.

If you are interested in doing some playtesting, please respond to this posting and indicate how many members of your test team there may be. I would recommend anywhere between 3 and 6 testers for each Testing Supervisor (the DM), but we will not discount interested parties that are either larger or smaller.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to let me know.
