I figure that to help get this little section started, I'll post some reviews. I'm going to take reviews off of the SLB website and put them into separate topics under author. Feel free to comment, maybe add some reviews of your own if you've read the book, or, if you're one of the authors, add some commentary of your own.

I'm beginning with topics for Justin Smith author of The Mills of God), Stuart Clark (author of Project U.L.F.), and myself. I'm not including Mike Lynch & Brandon Barr for now only because the books are not out and there are no pre-release reviews yet. If I see any (or Mike, if you get any), he or I will add a topic for him as well.

Are you willing to do reviews for the authors on this site perhaps?

I'm probably not the best person for reviews. Usually, I say "that's pretty good" for just about everything without going into detail or the traditional review summaries. A few years back, I was asked to review someone's book, and I decided to try and give some really productive and constructive criticism rather than "I liked it," and my words were so wonderful that she stopped writing! Oops!

I'm not the only SLB author here though. Stuart, Mike, you guys up for some reviews?

I made a promise to another, well-established sci-fi author that if anyone asked me to review their work, I would do so. Bear in mind, I am a bit new to this side of the publishing business, but if you want to hear my 2-cents worth, I am willing to offer my opinion. Just remember, you get what you pay for.

And speaking of money, what is the going rate for a favorable book review these days anyway? $100? $200? Just send a money order to me, with the appropriate review you want me to check off on your list of options.

RR Bowker is charging $300, actually....

No guarantees of it being favorable.

Is that true? Someone actually charges money to review an author's book. Yikes!

I learned about it at the BEA in New York a couple of years ago. It's a movement to have a guaranteed review if interested, but you wind up paying for it. I was at a luncheon conference where they were introducing it. A lot of the commentary was around the integrity of the review (if you're paying for it, is it seen as being honest and truthful, or would everyone get a good review). Their response was that they were potentially overly critical since they were charging for it and never wanted it to come across that people were paying for good reviews. They also said that if you don't like a review, you have the option of it not being posted....of course, they aren't going to reimburse you if you decide to scrap the review!

Bowker can get away with that. I'll pass though. Mike, if you've got time I'd love to have you do a review of mine. Do you mind working from the .doc file or do you want print?

I'd love to review your work. Why don't you e-mail it to me. With Easter upon us, the school where I work will be closed all next week. I'll have a bit of time on my hands to do some reading. Just send it to:

kmlynch158@sbcglobal.net

I hope to hear from you soon,

Mike
