Because of all the help and assistance I recently received and kind acceptance from CrystalWizard, CyberWizard productions will be bringing out my anthology They are not What They Seem.

However, CW wants the book to be roughly twice as long as I was going to do it at. Therefore, i have reopened for submissions on it.

THINGS ARE NOT WHAT THEY SEEM
They're Not What They Seem: Tales of mimcry and deception" is about deceptions, mostly something that appears to be one thing and is actually another. In the natural world there are passive and aggressive mimics such as the milksnake and the venus fly trap. In lore, the myth of the kelpie is an excellent example of a mimic. It is a malign water spirit that appears to be a horse but when someone gets on its back it is carried off and drowned. Fantasy, dark fantasy and horror are all good. This is a broad enough category that it should produce some breadth of ideas.

Sword and Sorcery is fine. I have purchased three so far from that genre. I have a surrealist tale from Kaolin and a borderline mainstream story from lyn McConchie.

Jack Kincaid is my newest acquisition for the anthology.

cyberwizardproductions.googlepages.com/
janraefrank@gmail.com for subs.

Edited to add: a horror element is not required. Science fiction is welcome. All genres are welcome so long as they fit the theme of mimicry and deceptive appearances.

Once there were three brothers, Brandrahoon the vampire, Isranon called the Dawnhand, speaker to spirits, and Waejonan the Accursed, first of sa’necari. Isranon defied his brothers and was destroyed, his descendants forced into the darkness.

I would prefer to have stories that are under 8K, but I will accept novelettes if they knock my socks off.

I am offering a $25 advance against royalties. I am doing this a bit different because I see it as a joint venture of all concerned and will split the royalties equally between all authors. My share of the royalties will be identical to everyone else's instead of taking the traditional editor's portion which would have been higher.

The anthology will be roughly 50% reprint because there are so many outstanding stories that deserve to be seen again.

I would like to say that the deadline is open until the end of March so that I can have everything wrapped up by the end of May, however, I will extend it if I do not get enough good stories for it.

It's a labor of love.

I have not done an anthology since 1995, and I loved doing it.

Thanks, Daniel.

I had been at the point of canceling my anthology plans because I had become so worn out this year. Then people started rallying around and offering to help with the work load. CW is a miracle worker.

My previous anthology was New Eves, entirely reprint, traced the place and contributions of women writers in science fiction. I enjoyed doing it. Forrey Ackerman would pull all the old pulps and other magazines in his collection off the shelf and send them to me. Then Jean would read through first for what she thought was the best ones and pile them up in my in box. Then I made the final selections. It was such a pleasure to do. That one came out from Longmeadow in hardcover and ended up on a lot of feminist reading lists. It went through three printings.

I would love to see this one become as successful as New Eves.

I just accepted a story from Angeline Hawkes which is so intense that it made me shiver. She told me that I was the only editor with the "balls" to accept it. I suspect that it will be the story that gets the most reaction from reviewers. They will either love it or hate it, but I doubt that any of them will be able to ignore it.

science fiction is fine also. I want to stretch the boundaries of the topic and show just how far it can be carried. People tend to think that a theme has to be rigidly attached to a single genre. I saw what a bang up job that Kaolin did with GUD and I would like to have something that is as good as GUD.

yes I got it. I have about one to two weeks of work left on a book I have to turn in as I got the edited copy and the publisher wants it turned around as fast as I can do it. So I'm running behind while I satisfy them A list of 36 things they wanted fixed, some of it fairly heavy revisions. I have it down to 28 by dint of working at a frantic pace. It has to be turned in no later than Feb 1. Then I will focus completely on the anthology.

It happens to me a lot. However, I finally see the end in sight on The Shadowed Princes. The editor wants two more scenes to foreshadow an event near the end and a transition revised. Then I can breathe again and start reading on the anthology. It has been an exhausting editorial process this time, but i think it was worth it.

I am down to finishing one story that is pre-sold but only about 15% written, writing a promised flash, and doing requested revision on another. This weekend. I am not complaining, not at all, because a) Holy cats! People want my stuff! and b) last weekend was worse. So like you, I am making progress, though it seems impossibly slow.

It is nice to be wanted and appreciated so much that the work keeps coming in. However, sometimes i really do feel overwhelmed. My publisher IM'd me today to let me know that Kady's Vengeance will be out on Monday at Fictionwise. I got to bask in that fact for a moment , then she says "So you have the final book in the series finished?"

"Yes."

"What's the next one going to be? And when do I get the first book in it."

I sighed and made my excuses and left, once more feeling overwhelmed.

but all in all it's a good feeling.
