Book retailer Borders has effectively put itself up for sale after becoming the latest victim of the global credit crisis.

Borders Group, which owns 1,100 shops around the world, has appointed JP Morgan and Merrill Lynch to "explore strategic alternatives" after running out of ways to raise fresh funding.

The phrase is banker speak for hoisting the "for sale" sign, with the two investment banks most likely retained to find the highest bidder. In addition, Borders has suspended its quarterly dividend programme, and has agreed a short-term funding line commitment from hedge fund Pershing Square.

Borders' also has until January 2009 to decide whether or not it wants to permit Pershing, led by vocal activist Bill Ackman, to buy its Paperchase division as well as its operations in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and its residual stake in the UK business.

The bulk of Borders' stake in its British arm was sold to Luke Johnson's private equity house Risk Capital Partners last September for an initial £10m fee and a further £10m depending on future performance.

Borders chief executive George Jones said the retailer had explored various funding options, but that "the current credit environment has made many of these alternatives prohibitively expensive or entirely unavailable."

The book retailer has been hit by the increasing popularity of online book sellers such as Amazon and Play.com, and also by the weakening consumer economy, with shoppers having less money in their wallets and purses to buy books, magazines and music.

Full-year results from Borders released at the same time as news of the strategic review show that Borders recorded a net loss of $157.4m in the year to February 2, on top of $151.3m of losses the prior year. Part of the loss came from a one-off $125.7m post-tax loss on the sale of its majority stake in Borders UK.

Shares in Borders have slumped from highs of $23.41 last May to $5.39, valuing the business at $313m.

Other book stores might want to pay attention to what happened to Borders, look at what Hastings, Amazon and Barnes and Noble are doing and pay heed.

Damn.

I really like Borders.

At Borders I can get a 'membership' card for free that entitles me to coupons, etc. B&N want $25 annually from me for a similar benefit.

I'm a little surprised Amazon is hurting them - only because Borders merged their web shopping with Amazon quite a while ago - but any online ordering hurts the physical retail stores, I suppose.

I like Amazon and use them (and I get free stuff because of my credit card) but there still is nothing like walking through a real bookstore and taking books in hand.

And small hole-in-the wall used book stores are even better than places like borders. There's one up in Deton that I found a couple weeks ago. Shelves cramed with books, and the store crammed with shelves. It SMELLS like a bookstore, not like a Starbucks. It FEELS like a bookstore. It was hard to walk back out once I walked in.

Absoultely.

Over the past five years I spent a lot of time at any used book stores I could find hunting for all those out-of-print sword-&-sorcery books. For a while I hardly went into a chain store looking for anything new!

Quite a few of the local used book stores have also folded in that timeframe, though. cry

Oh man, you guys have got me nearly wishing for the good ole days. You know, pre-B&N. Pre-Internet.

But who am I to complain? I live within walking distance of five used book stores and two college book stores. Haven't been into a chain store in months, and don't see any reason to anytime soon.

And you've contacted all those stores, and talked them into carrying a few copies of Rots, right?

Ha ha! I've been to those stores I mentioned that were near me. RotS is a tough sell to them, though, as they only sell used books.

I haven't been able to get in touch yet with the purchasing manager at my local BN, but I believe I've talked the folks at my Jo-Beth's into buying some copies. It's been a couple of weeks since I've talked to them, though, so maybe I should bug them, er, I mean call them again.

Suggest they carry a couple on commission and point out that you are a local author.

Don't hold your breath with B&N unless you go do a book signing. I've already discussed this with them. They like authors that do book signings. But you have to bring your own books. If you do well, they'll want you back. If you do well again, they'll want you back AND want your books on their shelves.

Suggest you (and all the other authors) start setting up appearances, readings, signings and everything else you can do to get out into the public eye. The books aren't going to sell if people don't know you.

I actually did a reading to a small group last week. Just 6 or so people who make up a local writers' group at a coffee house. Doubt I made any sales as most of the folks there were literary types, but at least one person showed some interest.
