Does anyone else play guitars?  Been downloading a lot of tablatures these past few days.  lol

I used to play, but haven't picked one up in a while. I used to have a nice Strat, and a good steel-string acoustic. I dropped the acoustic and broke the neck, alas. Sold the Strat years ago during a lean time. Some day I'll pick one up again--it was very therapeutic.

I wish I had musical talent, and admire all of you who do. Guitar and bass players are amazing to watch. I tried once to learn how, but my talents obviously lie in other areas.  For now I'm relegated to air guitar! cry
 
By the way, has anyone tried Guitar Hero?  I'm dying to try that! 
 
In the meantime, I've asked God for musical talent when I get to heaven. I love to sing His praises in church (alas, loudly and poorly). Strangely, the people in the row in front of me always wind up with curled hair by the end of the praise and worship.

Thirdy,back in my misspent youth I had an Ovation round bottom accustic. Then i switched to drums.never looked back.(methinks i see the makings of a band in here) GL it matters not how good your voice is in church. its the praise that matters.

I've been playing since birth--pretty much a requirement to be in my family. I have 4 guitars curently, and one bass. But I've had everything from Les Pauls to junky off brands over the years. Double necks, flying Vs--I've tried about everything that ever came out. I have a small digital studio setup in my home with several amps (my favorite setup is my limited edition Washburn played through a Crate amp). I have a nice Yamaha sound system with some booming Peavy Black Widows attached, and a 64 track digital studio. I play guitar, drums, bass and keys (a little). Just bought myself a nice digital grand piano for Christmas. I paid for part of my education with a voice scholarship. I've done just about every kind of music and liked most of it. I've even sang opera on stage a few times. I love classic rock, southern rock and contemporary Christian music best. Country is okay too (I live too close to Nashville to say otherwise). I like blues and a bit of jazz from time to time. Heck, I even like a little Southern Gospel once in a while.

I taught myself the basics of guitar about four years ago. So I have one steel-string acoustic. Mostly I just strum along while I sing--I have a background in youth camps and such, so that was more what I pictured myself doing, though by then I wasn't working in camps anymore. I love it as something to do when I need a break from writing--I grew up taking piano lessons, but it's harder for me to play piano and pay attention to my son, so he likes it better when I'm strumming and singing to him. I have a harmonica too (that I got last year sometime) and would love to get to the point where I could do some Dylan impressions...but for now I don't do much with it.

I have an Alvarez acoustic guitar that I've had for more than 20 years, plus a Lotus bass and couple of mandolins. I grew up playing drums, but switched to bass when my friends and I started a country/rock band way back in the early Pre-Cambrian. I don't get much chance to play these days, but it was always a blast.

I have a pretty accoustic washburn guitar but am having difficulty teaching myself to play it. All my musical background is woodwind and brass and the guitar is hugely different. Once I get past the fact that nothing sounds right to my ear - I hope to be able to actually play it but, at the moment, I'm just... stuck. But I'm having fun trying to figure it out anyway. When my fingertips don't scream at me.

Yeah, I' ve got a 20-year old Fender Acoustic. Cheap but solid top and with age the sound has improved. But like all Fender acoustics it has really high action so is a bitch on your fingers. However, I play three finger style and it gets a really nice sound going. Just today I bought a Taylor DN3. Sweeeet! After the Fender it feels like it plays itself.

I was a semi-pro for a while in the nineties in an alternative band called Head Circus based out of Santa Cruz, CA. I have a couple of acoustics and a Les Paul, my "Black Beauty". Been playing for twenty years, but lately my passion has been for writing. Got so sick of the business side of music. But I still love the guitar. Metal and folk are my main areas.

Check out my story "Cold Snap" in Lords of Justice from Carnifex Press. It's an anthology of kick-ass super hero novellas.

Yup. Played in a band for awhile.

Plenty of guitars - Gibson SG, 2 Fender Telecasters, 12-string and 6-string acoustics, and a few years ago I picked up one of the new Fender steel bodied acoustic guitars (a lower price alternative to a true National Steel.) It's really nice. I was going to get their Dobro but the neck on the steel was much nicer, so I ponied up the extra cash.

I run the electrics through a Peavey Classic 30watt combo and/or a pre-CBS blackface Fender Bandmaster with a custom 1x12 cab I picked up last year.

 Hey, that's a new fusion we should have: folk metal. Electric distortion, crazy time signatures, and low down-in-your-gut minor chords on old Pete Seeger tunes. Some folk songs would transfer quite naturally: Dylan's "Masters of War," for instance.

Anyone into acoustic country blues? That's mainly what I play. Three finger picking in the style invented by Mississippi John Hurt. Bass played with the thumb, melody and rhythm by first and second fingers. Some of John's songs have such great lyrics. "Blues got the rabbit, ran him a country mile. It's your time, baby, be mine after while." "Mister, can you change a dollar? Give me a lucky dime." He wrote the song "Loving Spoonful," and John Sebastian named his group after that song. Sebastian learned how to play that style after meeting Hurt in a Greenwich Village night spot.

"Into" doesn't even begin to describe it.

Mississippi John Hurt, Reverend Gary Davis, Skip James, Son House, Charlie Patton, Taj Mahal (when he does his acoustic stuff), Cephas & Wiggins, and countless "one-hit" wonders along the way.

Yeah - I'm VERY into it.

And the incredible Blind Willy Johnson. His recording of "Cold is the Ground, Dark is the Night" is being played on the Voyager space satellite. It was featured in the Wim Wenders-directed segment of The Blues series produced by Martin Scorcese, which you probably have seen. If not, it's something eveyone should see before they die. Cosmic.

I used to do some weird stuff with a white Fender Stratocaster that had been lent to me by a girlfriend, just short of setting it on fire like Hendrix did. The sounds I produced on it by laying it on the floor and beating it like a drum amazed two girls I met in a graveyard one afternoon, and that was enough for me, ending my six-string career.

Keeping with a spec-fic feel, I routinely listen to Current 93, the Sisters of Mercy, the Mission UK, Coil, Dead Can Dance and... well, I guess that's enough for starters.

If you've never heard Current 93, wow. Just wow.

I have a Peavey T-15 guitar I bought back in the early Pre-Cambrian. I was mainly vocals and I was just at the point of really learning to play guitar when the band I was in faded away. I didn't pick up a guitar to try to play it for over 20 years. I was given an Ovation acoustic guitar for my birthday last December and have been teaching myself to play (again). "I got blisters on me fingers!" Actually they are finally calluses.

As for what I listen to... I am eclectic, but recently have been on a country/rock nostalgia kick and have been listening a lot to The Outlaws, Ozark Mountain Daredevils, Free, Eagles, Poco, Pure Prairie League, McGuffey Lane and the like...

Masters of War is a great song. That's a good idea. I am also looking at Phil Och's Universal Soldier. Man I would love to do an album of metal versions of protest songs.... some day.

Unfortunately the "folk metal" thing is already kind of a parody via Jack Black's band Tenacious D. While there is some overlap, mainly I listen and play them separately. It's a weird thing, I mainly listen to metal, but my songwriting is all acoustic peace and love music. lol

Guitar fans, check out Rodrigo y Gabriella. They are a Mexican duo who perform flamenco guitar with metal sensibilities. Their version of Orion (a Metallica instrumental) and Stairway to Heaven are deity worthy.

As far as what I am listening to...

For novelling I like mostly heavy instrumental music, mainly soundtracks: 300, Planet of the Apes, Brotherhood of the Wolf, Conan (of course), Andy McKee, Loreena McKinnet, Kate Price, Blackmore's Night, Mike Marchall & Chris Thile's bluegrass powerhouse Into the Cauldron, and Apocalyptica. Add some gothic music like Dead Can Dance, Peter Murphy and Bauhaus, when appropriate.

For general purposes, the bands I have been listening to lately include Down, Killswitch Engage, Atreyu, Kittie, Cell Dweller, Disturbed, Linkin Park, Evanescence (*swoon*), and Lacuna Coil, among others including lots of classic metal bands.
