This was the 'Harry Potter' of the 1960s, only better: written for children, but well-written enough to grip adults. Some Tolkienesque elements, but with a real, contemporary setting in Cheshire and starring two ordinary children (brother and sister) who unwittingly become the focus of a huge good vs evil battle with wizards, witches and various inhuman beings. Highly recommended - and still available. There's a full review on my blog.
