I finished reading the first novel, Xenos, of the Warhammer 40,000 Eisenhorn omnibus. It was really good. (yes, Howard, I'll get a review written eventually when I finish the entire omnibus smilewinkgrin )

Yesterday I bought Let the Galaxy Burn. It's an anthology. I didn't realize it until I saw it in the store--it is huge. It is the size of an omnibus and features thirty-eight (count 'em!) stories.

I'll be a-while with that one, too.

I've liked my Warhammer and Warhammer 40K reads so far. A few were 'functional'--readable but not special. But some have really stood out (Xenos, Trollslayer.)

Definitely a line worth giving a try if you like dark, gritty fantasy and/or dark, gritty space opera.

I've only read the Warhammer 40k, line but I have to agree its good gritty space opera. I really enjoyed that and am keeping my eye out for some regular Warhammers to try. Now I know where to start.

I'd recommend some of the Warhammer fantasy stuff too. In particular, the stories by Jack Yeovil (aka Kim Newman) are good: Drachenfels and Beasts in Velvet are both very entertaining. They now come collected as The Vampire Genevieve along with various other short stories.

If you liked Xenos, you should give Abnett's Gaunt's Ghosts series a try.

If you want a good novel detailing starship combat in the 40K setting, you really need to read Gordon Rennie's Execution Hour; http://www.blacklibrary.com/product.asp?prod=60109999029&type=Book

You say God's spark has kindled my eye,
As the sun-rise reddens the east;
Into your beards I roar the lie-
'Tis the gleam of the stalking beast.

Thanks for the recommendation.

I have (finally) started to read C. L. Werner's Witch Hunter. Mathias Thulmann is quite the character. He is, indeed, "something of a hybrid of Matthew Hopkins and Solomon Kane" as C. L. stated in his interview a-while back.
