I am damned with a slow reading speed and the obsessive-compulsive nature that makes me buy books faster than I can read them.  Why, then, am I smiling?

I have the same problem--stacks of books purchased on a whim and no time to read them. My house is becoming a fire hazard. But used books are so cheap! And they have the delicious, musty smell of knowledge and imagination.

And you never know when you'll stumble over a signed copy. (Bought a signed HC of Koontz's FEAR NOTHING for $5. I also have a signed PB of BLACK LIGHTNING by John Saul, but I'm not sure if the autograph is genuine.)

Anyway, here are my latest purchases:
FEARS edited by Charles Grant
BODY BAGS by Christopher Golden
SLAUGHTERHOUSE-FIVE by Kurt Vonnegut

Yes, the rare gem is always great to find.

Just yesterday I snagged a gaggle of very fine paperback books by REH: Conan, Tigers of the Sea, and Son of the White Wolf.

Another gem! Found a pristine 1st printing Lancer edition of Conan of the Isles for $2 yesterday. The thing hasn't even been read.

I just got back from the local used book store. I took in five, I walked out with eleven. Oops. And I was finally clearing out the books stacked in front of the books shelved on my to-be-read bookshelves.

Ender's Game, Orson Scott Card. I've been wanting a copy for my permanent collection.

The King of Elfland's Daughter, Lord Dunsany. I've listened to the musical scores of times, but I've never read it.

The Knight and Knave of Swords, Fritz Leiber. Boy, did the cover of this one make me not want to buy it, but I've not read this collection.

Midnight at the Well of Souls, Jack L. Chalker. I've never read anything from Chalker. Figured this was the place to start.

Frost Flower and Thorn, Phyllis Ann Karr. Caught my eye the first time I was in the story, but author and title drew a blank, so I did a little research. This is the main reason I went back to the store.

Frost Flower and Windbourne, Phyllis Ann Karr. Ditto.

Pursuit on Ganymede, Michael Resnick. Haven't read anything but one short story and his editorials.

The Girl Who Was Plugged In, James Tiptree Jr, and Screwtop, Vonda N McIntyre. I've not read anything from Tiptree, nor do I recall ever buying a double.

King Kobold, Christopher Stasheff. Sounded too goofy to pass up.

A Fisherman of the Inland Sea, Ursula K Le Guin. I'm pretty limited in what I like from Le Guin, but I haven't read this and momentum was on my side.

War-Gamers' World, Hugh Walker. Momentum purchase.

Total expenditure: $14.11. The books already on my TBR shelves will not be happy with me.

Agreed. Worst cover ever. But I still bought it, too.

Just bought three Thieves' World novels and The Merman's Children, by Poul Anderson for reading, as well as a mint condition copy of Swords of Darkness for my collection.

It's a literary study of heroic fantasy. Goes through the history of the genre and talks about its influential authors. It's a great, high-quality, hard cover book put out by Arkham House in (in 1976, I think). The cover looks like one of the original D&D modules, only better. The copy I have is from a library, but it obviously wasn't circulated. Other than a stamp, it's in almost perfect condition, including the dust jacket.

What the Whisper of Blood antho you picked up all about?

Hey, I bought the whole used bookstore--well over 150,000 books added to the 50,000 I already had. I was in used books for nearly eight years before the bottom fell out of the used book business due to sites like Amazon and ABE flooding the market. So I sold out last year. It was fun and profitable while it lasted.

You ever tried to move 150,000 books in a single day? It's a bear. Two of us loaded them and six unloaded. You should see what 150,000 books does to the tires on a 36 foot rental truck that is rated for 10 tons but carrying about 13 tons. :-) Luckily I made it back without a blowout or a ticket. But those tires were squating and the springs were nearly upside down. When I sold out the stock I had left split and went to CA and SC from TN in four trucks.

So, I've handled a few used books. The most expensive book I ever sold was about $2500.00. It was a signed first edition of Jim Thompson's "Heed the Thunder." I also sold a signed copy of Rosa Parks biography for $2000. And I sold a signed copy of an old Analog magazine that had the first appearance of "Ender's Game" as a short story for $1500. And I had a copy of the 1951 Galaxy magazine that had Ray Bradbury's "The Fireman" in it (later became Fahrenheit 451). I'd like to have those two back.

King Kobold is part of a series.
Great stories.

I recall a late 70's edition that had an awesome front cover..a sci-fi viking longship cutting thru a huge storm.

I have in my hot little hands:

Swordsmen in the Sky edited by Donald A Wollheim. With stories by Poul Anderson, Andre Norton, Leigh Brackett, Otis Albert Kline and Edmond Hamilton inside. The front cover is Frank Frazetta.
Earliest story written in 1933. This book published 1964.

Also have: Gulliver of Mars by Edwin L Arnold. First published 1905. This edition; Circa the early 60's. Cover by Frazetta.

Brian Aldiss: Equator.

Plus a half dozen others I haven't looked at yet.

Yes I'm having a great weekend!

Swordsmen in the sky is my favorite fantasy anthology. Love the Anderson story there. "War Gamers" world" is also a nice purchase. That's part of a three book series that is really good, in my opinion.
