So I was talking to Dave about the possible website changes, and one of the things I mentioned was a wikipedia, which potentially could be both a resource and take advantage of the knowledge of the folks on this forum. Having noted the many ask an expert questions satisfactorily answered, and the general interest in and awareness of S&S on this board, I'm wondering if you all think it's feasible to create a wikipedia specifically for things to do with S&S -- authors, books, situations, whatever, really.

My thought is that there are enough people on this board that copying and pasting some of the forum messages we've already seen regarding various subjects, authors etc. would not be difficult, and there are certainly enough regular posters who might be willing to cross post their wisdom into a text block now and again, and enough editors on here that I'm certain people would clean up articles as necessary.

good idea? bad idea? something you'd be interested in as a user or helper or both?

it of course would not be limited to S&S necessarily and could include any of the various geners (s&planet, etc.) -- thoughts?

I like it :) We've got a lot of stuff on the FS website that you could seed it with too, if you want.

But it would be a S&S Wiki, unless you're wanting to put an additional page to Wikipedia

I'm personally thinking of our own domain and or wiki -- it would be specifically for the various sword & type s of genres -- not just adding info to wikipedia.org or whoever.

I like the idea, though I think it would definitely be worth while to get Howard Andrew Jones' thoughts on this to see if and how this Wiki could be coordinated with swordandsorcery.org. I'm not sure what his future plans are for that site, and maybe I'm speaking out of turn here, but these two things seem like a logical partnership.

Not to mention that Black Gate should at least be invited to participate.

Well, this is sort of the point -- I would WANT people to participate, and hope that they would -- especially folks involved with the various organizations that frequent this board -- Black Gate, Sword & Sorcery.org, Carnifex, etc. Not to mention individuals that contribute a great deal of info just to this forum (GW's picks of the day spring to mind).

What I'm trying to gauge is whether there's any interest in doing just that (participate) -- wikis are sort of community projects, by their nature, and community policed.

I think if you put it up, I can twist plenty of arms into participating :)

Yes, I like the idea of this - but! I've never chosen to learn how to effect changes in wiki-anythings. How easy is it and who has access to doing it? If just anybody can do it, how do we monitor that?

And does such a wiki-thingy allow things like this: http://www.visualthesaurus.com/? If so, I'd love to have that, and if so, may I suggest our wiki not just be restricted to S&S but be more 'heroic adventure fiction' oriented, thus allowing us to take advantage of such a cool thing like the thinkmap and give visual display to the interconnectedness of all the genres involving heroics?  Shoot, we could even get superheros in on that.  I'm thinking the more general we start, the more appeal and points of contact we have, thus enabling us to bring more people to us. With our newly created consolidated site that Dave's looking into, this is win-win, baby!

Now, as far as Black Gate and HAJ and S&S.org go, Howard is in the process of slowly assimilating all the S&S.org info into BG. But with a wiki/thinkmap coolness, at the very least we could link into his/the BG resources . . . and those at any other willing-to-be-involved site - thus expanding our saturation in yet another method!

Remember, we have to be seen a minimum of 7 times to be noticed, though lately, I've been hearing that pushed up to 12.

Good ideas, Dave and Pete - that's why we all bow before you and intone 'We're not worthy!' smurf

There are generally a number of different settings -- the admin can set it so only other admins can create or edit topics, or break it down into specific permissions. Or, only logged-in, registered users. Etc. Basically, everybody keeps an eye out for shenanigans, and there could be five or six moderators who would actually get changes brought to their attention.

I'm not sure what the visual thesaurus does and I can't log in - but if you've ever wasted 5 or 6 hours on wikipedia, you'll have an idea of what it can do -- hosting images, etc.

Re: broadening the definition -- I'm completely in favour of that -- heroic adventure is a good label that could encompass sword & planet, space opera, etc.

My thoughts exactly -- we could even look at link trading and "sponsorships" or something. (this months Heropedia brought to you by Black Gate! Or something...)
