Pretty cool story, Nicholas. I usually like something more dramatic, but I really enjoyed this one. Good work, and congrats on getting it in there!

Thanks for reading the story, Michael! I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Alas, this is not my "preferred" version of the story. After I initially submitted it, I didn't hear back from WWO for months. In the meantime I made minor changes to a couple key scenes, to instill a little more dramatic action (and also to flesh out the character of the daughter a bit more). The climactic scene, as it appears, has happened offstage; we only see the aftermath. In my rewrite, it transpires in full view of the protagonist--more tension and suspense. When I got a note out of the blue from WWO that they were going to run it, I sent them the revised version, and was told that it would be the one they used. But the first version was the one that went up.

I'm still proud of the story as it is, but I'm irked to know that it contains some flaws and that there is a better version.

Perhaps I'll have to shop the revised version around for second print rights.

Congrats. Wonder if WW will re-post your revised version?

Lyn, I doubt it. They have put out four issues since then. I did inform them of the error immediately after it went up in October, but it was never changed. I gave up following up on it--it was almost a year in their slush pile, then almost another year before it went up, and then it took five months to collect payment for the story. While I can heartily promote the site both for publishing my story and paying me for it, their timeliness in correspondence leaves much to be desired.

Hmm, couldn't find your brag thread about Uncle Lester Had a Hammer at EDF - so I'll copy here what I wrote at EDF:
Good piece of flash. Complete tale and nicely hammered out...at the end! :-) I had a feeling you were taking me someplace other than Uncle Les, but had to wait to the phone call to find out. I like it when that happens. Congrats.
