I like a historical type novel that is so historically accurate that I can often think about the book after I have finished it. I sometimes put myself into the shoes of the characters and day- dream about what would I do if I were in that situation? Would I start my own shipping company if I were living in 1699 Boston? Would I trade with the islands, or with London? And so it goes.
So, I would say that a good Pirate novel would tie itself to enough specific area history to become a historical-fiction novel. One must be careful here, because failure to put enough time-sensitive history into it would result in it falling between the cracks into bad-fantasy or romance, or something else. One would not want to mention the characters talking to Francis Drake in 1599, for example.
"Log Cabin Noble" is one of my favorites, and it deals like this, so it is historical fiction. There are many romance books with Pirate themes, but they are something else entirely. History first, romance second; that is what I like in a pirate novel...Just MHO. | | Back to Top | | |
