I think they've already nailed this one - haven't they? My father has steel plates up his shinbone, which were inserted when he was 15 & I've got a friend who has just had a metal joint inserted to replace a failed kneecap & if memory serves, surely hip replacements are all metal?? The ongoing problem is wear and tear, rather than allergic reactions, as far as I can see. I know that hips put in now are due to last for about 15 years - and those that were put in earlier had a lifespan as short as 8 years.

We see a lot of stories and movies these days about cyborgs and humans with robotic parts. Would there a serious problem with a person's immune system with so much metal present? I know there are amputees coping with a similar situation, but does anyone know the medical obstacles that would have to be overcome to truly mesh man with machine?
