Right, I've got a domain name and anemic site made with goggle apps, which doesn't require any sort of real web hosting (and doesn't cost anything either) which is essentially, in wikipedia parlance, a stub. A placeholder.

I'd like to get my grove on with wordpress (the download one, not the hosted one) and get my own big boy site like old von D-moor and some of you other cool cats, and I'd like some input on what's a good (cheap) web host. Don't need a lot of bells and whistles.

Lots of information out there and I've read a lot of opinions, but I'd rather hear from people I know.

Or, is it possible to do some sort of cheaper, hosted option (like blogger?) and still use my domain name for redirects?

What are some good (cheap) options?

Bill, it depends on what you mean by cheap. For about 150 bucks a year you should be able to get a good solid real host. By real, I mean a person vs. a conglomerate. But basically, what do you want to do with the site? Blog? Forum? Both?

Here's the company I use -- I've been with them for about 5 years, and can't see myself going anywhere else, frankly. They've been awesome since day one, even putting together an email only package, mostly because I asked for it:

I use blogger for my zine - http://residentialaliens.blogspot.com/
But I'd like to have my own domain name as well with a bit more
template flexibility. But for now, it's good. And I think my zine
looks pretty sharp for a free site (if I do say so myself, lol) :-)

I use SurpassHosting for mine and they're great. It's around $50/year for the hosting, another $15 or so to register a domain. Since you already have one, you might be able to just port that over.

They also have a slick little program called Fantastico that will install stuff automatically for you, such as Wordpress. This is a good example of a bell and/or whistle, but frankly, once I started getting into it, I wanted these types of niceties much more than I had originally planned.

I've recently updated my site with Wordpress and some other things, check it out.

Site looks good Nathan, I'm surprised you were sober long enough to do such a nice job! ;-) I think I'll check out that surpass hosting.

Lyn, blogger is sort of appealing, but I want something with my own domain name, that isn't primarily a blog.

Thanks for the reqs UnclePete and CW, I should have been more specifc in my needs. I really just want a personal site that uses blogging software like Swords Against Boredom, or Nathan's site above, with a bit more functionality than the currently free but severely limited thing I'm using now. 50, 60 bucks a year is probably my limit.

an hosting

includes wordpress, ftp, email, everything you need. You can add wordpress plugins. If you want to customize, you can do so through FTP - I did a lot of work on the CSS for the look and feel

If you pay a year in advance it's $89

I just launched my newest site there using wordpress memoriesandmusic.com

I have my site www.rlcopple.com hosted by Lunar Pages. It is about $90/year, but it also allows you to set up multiple domains (up to 10 if I recall correctly) so I'm actually hosting about 4 sites right now for $90/year. But they have everything you need, and though I've not had a chance to use it yet (everything's worked perfectly since I've used them) they are reputed to have great customer service, including being able to get a hold of a live person.

They also have the Fantastico thing to install Word Press, which I use for my blog too.

Bill,

I use NetFirms - and recommend against them. They're prone to virus and malware. They handle such problems within a couple days when informed of it, but it does freaky things to your whole domain at times. So . . . go with one of the others. 2 cents . . .

Anyone had experience with DailyRazor hosting? I took a look at JCSHosting, clicked a "we're a good webhost" link, got to a site that rated hosts, and found DailyRazor in the top 25, offering basic sites for $20 a year. Has the control panel and this Fantastico the kids are all in a hoopla about these days.

As for blogs...I'm kind of over them. One big vomiting-forth of content, in reverse chronological order, seems...sub-optimal. A good content management system (CMS) seems the way to go.

Yep, you are right...it's a shortcoming. But Wordpress in Version 1.5 or so introduced a distinction between 'posts' and 'pages' which helps to eradicate this problem, albeit with slight amounts of trickery.

Now you can have several streams of vomit going at once, and can turn off one or more of the taps based on certain criteria.

I like Wordpress because it is simple and there is a profusion of plugins and themes for it. But if you are going for something more ambitious a full-blown CMS is the future. I checked out Joomla and it seemed pretty cool, but the learning curve is necessarily steeper.

As a follow up I want to thank everybody that weighed in here and let you know I've finally got a proper (well, mostly) website. I went with Surpass Hosting and am pleased with it, and I'm using WordPress--and really like that too!

Anyway, the new site is something that will be getting more updates than the old one, and I like using the blogging software as a way to easily add front page content to the site--anyone thinking of putting up a site for themselves shouldn't overlook wordpress and similar software simply because they don't want to blog, because you can do more with it than that (and I found it a lot easier to use than content managers like Drupal).

And a big thank-you to Bedford for walking me through some of my initial difficulties.

I referred to this thread just yesterday. I had tried a site with DailyRazor and it was a fiasco. Utterly horrible. I chose GoDaddy's hosting and it's bare-bones but otherwise okay.
