My wife and I plan to go to Switzerland for our 25th wedding anniversary. We will be there in mid-February. We plan to fly into Zurich and then stay in Kandersteg. What are travel conditions like in that area at that time of year? Can we rent a car and get around or is the weather too bad? Should we stick to rail and bus?

Any travel advice for Switzerland is appreciated. This is our first trip to Europe, so I'm a little uneasy about it.

Pretty snowy there in February. But they do know how to handle it. However, if I were you, I'd get a Eurorail pass. You will be amazed at how good the train system is over there. My wife and I took the train from Amsterdam to Lucerne several years ago. Trouble free, comfortable and good food. It all depends on how extensively you want to travel. IF you are going to stay in a small area of the country, rather than roaming around a lot, a car would probably be better. But try to reserve the car from here. It gets to confusing over there with the exchange rate. Have a blast. I envy you.

Thanks for that. I've heard good things about public transportation there. We'll only be there three daya nd I doubt we'll go far once we're settled in. But it is a 2 hour train ride from Zurich t Kandersteg. My biggest problem right now seems to be figuring out how to get back to Zurich for our 9:10 flight out. The earliest train arrives at the airport at around 8:20 and that's too tight. I either have to find a later flight a a way to get to Zurich faster. I had thought about driving, but figure I'll end up sliding into a ditch somewhere. :-)

A later flight would be the best bet. You can be sure to get to the airport by rail no matter the weather. Why hassle it?
