What it's about is intellectual laziness and the overwillingness to apply the label "gonzo" to things. An Amazon customer review mentioned "'gonzo' fantasy, a style in which the author uses actual history for the majority of the plot, but inserts fantastic elements that explain actions left mysterious by time and which will provide the details of the story." Hrm...sounds like alternate history, perhaps? I'd put the gonzo label in the same junk drawer as "slipstream".
